The Asian Football Confederation's 1996 AFC Asian Cup finals were held in the United Arab Emirates between December 4 and December 21. Saudi Arabia defeated host nation U.A.E. in the final match in Abu Dhabi.
Qualification
- United Arab Emirates qualified automatically as host
- Japan qualified automatically as defending champions
33 teams participated in a preliminary tournament. It was divided into 10 groups and the first-placed team of each group thus qualified.
