Awwwards (Awwwards Online SL) is a professional web design and development competition body. It aims to recognize and promote the best of innovative web design.[2] It is widely regarded as the premier website competition to submit to.[3][4][5][6][7] The best year-round submissions are awarded at the Awwwards conference and prize-giving ceremony, which take place in various cities across the United States and Europe.[8]

Awwwards was founded in 2009, and is headquartered in Valencia, Spain.[9]

Nomination process

In the first phase of the nomination process, web designers submit their work through Awwwards' website for consideration for Site of the Day.[11] The work is then judged by the Awwwards community and an international jury panel composed of noteworthy designers, developers, and agencies.[12] The best daily sites are also published in Awwward's year-end "The 365 Best Websites Around the World" book.[1]

In the second voting phase, each month's six highest-scoring sites are nominated for Site of the Month and are reviewed by the jury for a second time. The site that receives the most votes is named Site of the Month.

Site of the Month winners proceed to the final judging phase of the competition: Site of the Year. This award is given out at the Awwwards conference and prize-giving ceremony.

Jury

The jury consists of multidisciplinary designers, developers, journalists, and agencies from across the globe.[13] The expert panel assesses the talent, effort, technicality, and insight that goes into the web projects submitted for consideration.[1]

Notable jury members include Dave Methvin, president of the jQuery foundation;[14] Julian Shapiro, creator of Velocity.js and Libscore;[15] Paul Irish, developer advocate for Google Chrome;[16] Davy Rudolph, interactive art director at Apple;[17] Dan Cederholm, co-founder of Dribbble;[18] Iris Lješnjanin, senior editor at Smashing Magazine;[19] and Tobias van Schneider, creative director of Spotify.[20]

Awards granted

Awwwards grants two types of awards: The designer's award and the developer's award.

Designer's award

The design award is Awwward's longest-standing award. It recognizes aesthetic, usability, and technical achievements in web design innovation. Submissions are judged on four criteria: design, usability, creativity, and content.

Developer's award

The developer's award was created in partnership with Microsoft, and it aims to award developers who've achieved significant web development programming mastery. "Well-developed" websites are those that are interoperable across all major browsers and operating systems, are accessible across a variety of computing devices, and employ HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS coding best-practices.[21] Developer Award winners are invited to be profiled on Internet Explorer’s Showcase, a behind-the-scenes look at what inspired the site and how it was developed.[22]

Ceremonies

Awwwards prize-giving

The prize-giving ceremony is held at the first Awwwards conference of each year. Awards given include Site of the Year, Developer of the Year, Agency of the Year, Independent designer of the Year, and Independent Creative Developer of the Year.

Awwwards conference

These events consist of two-day conferences featuring influential speakers from the web design industry. They bring together designers, developers, and agency representatives from over 40 different countries.[10] Conference speakers include executives and thought leaders from Microsoft, Google, Spotify, Adobe, Opera, Smashing Magazine, and other companies in the tech industry.[8][23]

The coming conferences will be held in The Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam between the 27th-29th of January 2016 and the FIAF Auditorium Manhattan NYC between the 15th-17th of June 2016.

Notable winners

Notable Site of the Year winners include Mercedes, Bloomberg, Bose, Warner Brothers, Volkswagen, Uber, and Google.[7]
