Baku Olympic Stadium is a 68,700-seat stadium, designed and constructed to meet the international standards for stadiums set by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
Construction of the 225,000-square-meter stadium on a 650,000-square-meter site was completed in February 2015. The six-story, 65.7 meter structure near Boyukshor Lake, Baku, Azerbaijan, opened on 6 March 2015.[1] The main tenant of the stadium is Azerbaijan's national football team, who moved from their previous home at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium. In June 2015 the stadium served as the main venue for the European Games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, and the athletic games. The venue is intended to host the quarterfinals and three of the group games for Euro 2020. A green area is being developed around the stadium, which is accessible via public transport.
History
The ceremony of laying the foundation
June 6, 2011 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Azerbaijani football was held a ceremony of laying the foundation of the Baku Olympic Stadium. The ceremony was attended by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva, and FIFA President Joseph Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini, prominent members of the global football community, heads of various federations, football veterans and other guests. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was informed about the future plans for the construction of the stadium. Speaking at the ceremony, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said:
"This is really beautiful, grand building, and more than 60 thousand football fans coming to the stadium will be able to enjoy football. "
Then Ilham Aliyev put a symbolic metal capsule inside the ball. The son of the president, Heydar Aliyev, scoring a goal in a symbolic gate, dropped it into the foundation. Later, President Ilham Aliyev, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini, switched on the installation of concrete pouring and signed on a soccer ball, which will be stored in the memory of the ceremony
Construction
Despite the groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2011, the construction of the stadium has started only in November 2012 with the excavation and backfilling of the stadium area.
In February 2013, it began full-scale construction of the stadium. The work was done in accordance with the International Standard construction (IBC), UEFA and FIFA standards and Azerbaijani construction regulations.
The opening of the stadium took place on March 6, 2015, President Ilham Aliyev participated in the opening ceremony.

Baku is ready for hosting the European Olympic Games and The Olympic Stadium Project is the most important and prestigious project of this organization. Improving the ecological status of the lake Boyukshor
According to international experts, the lake Boyukshor, which is built near the stadium, considered one of the most polluted lakes in the world. From the point of view of the fact that most of the activities of the first European Games had to be held on the eastern shore of Lake Boyukshor, in a newly built complex of the Baku Olympic Stadium, and that this area had to receive numerous guests, athletes and tourists was important complex ecological restoration of the lake Boyukhore and surrounding areas. According to the Minister of Economy and Industry Shahin Mustafayev improve environmental conditions and protect the lake Boyukshor planned in the framework of an action plan to improve the ecological status of 9 lakes of the Apsheron Peninsula, "State Program on socio-economic development of Baku and its settlements in 2014–2016".
The project of ecological restoration of the lake will be implemented in two stages. The first stage covered the years 2014–2015. At this stage, the territory was restored lake area of nearly 300 hectares, located near the place where the Olympic Stadium was built. At this stage it was separated and isolated by a dam north of the historic area of the lake contaminated with oil from the coastline. Thus, it blocked the path of oil contaminated waters and floating waste. The dam is designed as a six-lane highway and represents the western border area. In addition, the direction of the stadium installed sewers and built along the waterfront promenade boulevard and go to the stadium. The second phase of the full restoration of the lake Boyukshor cover the years 2015–2020, with the result that the lake will be returned to its natural historical track will adjust the level of the water is restored ecosystem.
On February 28, 2014, President Ilham Aliyev got acquainted with the work on integrated environmental restoration of Lake Boyukshor and surrounding areas.
Construction
The project is being funded by the SOCAR. A Turkish company Tekfen Construction and Installation Co.,Inc, were given a Design&Build contract.[2][3]
Along with the stadium, there were built a number of hotels, parking venue (total 3,617 car places), and green space (81,574 square meters).[4]
Tekfen Construction successfully completed turn-key design and construction of the project in 24 months and delivered to the client as planned at the commencement of the Project. Completed at an accelerated pace with exceptionally concentrated work and the project was finished after accident-free 20.5 million safe man-hours.
Stadium contains VVIP, VIP - CIP Suites total 127 each with 720 spectator's capacity, total special area of interior 25,200 m2 and Total Car Parking Area Capacity 3,078 cars. 1,800 Seating Capacity Warm Up Area, MEP Building, Info Centre and Two External Buildings are other building of Projects. Design and Engineering Service, Procurement and Logistic Services, Over All Turn Key Coordination Services, HSE Management Service, QA/QC Management Service, Construction Supervision Services and Planning and Project Controls Service.
Events
The venue will host games for the Azerbaijan national football team as well as concerts. Baku Olympic Stadium fulfils FIFA's and UEFA's highest technical recommendations and elite stadium obligations for football stadiums and is automatically qualified to arrange tournaments and qualification games in European Football Championships. The stadium hosted athletics, ceremonies during 2015 European Games and Quarter-finals and Group stage during UEFA Euro 2020.
