Beata Maria Szydło ([bɛˈata ˈmarja ˈʂɨdwɔ]; née Kusińska [kuˈɕiɲska]; 15 April 1963) is a Polish politician who has been Prime Minister of Poland since her cabinet took office on 16 November 2015. She is vice-chairman of the Law and Justice party and led two successful campaigns in the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2015. She is Poland's third female prime minister after Hanna Suchocka and Ewa Kopacz and the first to succeed another woman (Kopacz) in office.

Early life

Szydło was born in Oświęcim and raised near Brzeszcze, where her father was a miner.[1] She graduated from Jagiellonian University in Kraków in 1989.[2]

Political career

Szydło was elected mayor of Gmina Brzeszcze at the age of 35 years. In 2004, she participated in International Visitor Leadership Program.[3] In September 2005, she was elected to the Sejm receiving 14,499 votes in 12 Chrzanów district, as a candidate of the conservative Law and Justice party.[2]

At the Law and Justice party convention on 20 June 2015 Szydło was named as a candidate for the Prime Minister in the Polish parliamentary election.[4] After the Law and Justice party won the election in October 2015, Szydło became the Prime Minister of Poland taking office on 16 November 2015.[5] One of her first decisions was to remove the EU flag from press conferences at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and to replace the clock in the meeting hall of the Council of Ministers with a Cross.[6][7] Beata Szydło together with president Andrzej Duda and Jarosław Kaczyński and his Law and Justice political party, according to EU institutions, have been acting against the rules of democracy, law, Polish Constitution and Constitutional Court.

Personal life

Szydło is married to Edward Szydło. The couple has two sons Tymoteusz and Błażej.[1][2] She is a devout Catholic and declares her adherence to traditional Christian values.[8]
