Bible Society Australia
Bible Society Australia exists to put the Bible into people's hands.[1] They were inaugurated at the instigation of Governor Lachlan Macquarie in Sydney on 7 March 1817. The first Australasian translation was a selection of Scripture selections in the Maori language printed in 1827. The Bible Society is the oldest continuingly operating organisation in Australia.
In 2010, the Bible Societies of Australia in each state merged into a single organisation, Bible Society Australia.[2]
Mission
The stated goal of Bible Society Australia is "to translate, publish, distribute and engage people with the Bible."[2]
Projects
They have projects[3] in around 90 different languages.[4]
- There is a kids site at Bible Kids.
- They have a youth site at Godspeak.
- They have a project to take the Bible to Outback Australia with The Flying Bible Man.[5]
- They work with other organisations including Open Doors.[6]
- They have a project to translate the Bible into Auslan (Australian sign language) for the more than 10,000 people who use that language.[7]
- They own Koorong, a chain of bookshops
Effect on Australian society
As reported in the Christian Science Monitor, the Bible Society has some effect on "secular Australia" with an article "Strine slang Bible a hit in secular Australia".[8] They were featured on a 1967 Australia Post stamp.
