Bishopstown

Bishopstown (Irish: Baile an Easpaig, meaning "town of the Bishop")[1] is located in the civil parish of St. Finbar's, Barony of Cork, County Cork, Ireland. Today it is considered a southwestern suburb of Cork with a population of 24,136 people. Bishopstown consists of two townlands which are Ballineaspigmore and Ballineaspigbeg (sometimes spelt Ballinaspigmore, etc.).[2]

Despite common misconception, the origin of the town names does not stem from an early 18th-century bishop who built his country residence there. The town name can be traced back further and can be found in sources dating back to the 16th century.[3]

Education

The Cork University Hospital or CUH, the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland and is the only Level 1 trauma centre in the country is located in Bishopstown.

The Cork Institute of Technology or CIT is located in the locale. The secondary schools of Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Mount Mercy College, and Bishopstown Community School are also located here, along with a number of other schools.

Industry and Employment

As a suburban area, Bishopstown has a significant proportion of its population working in Cork City Centre. The suburb itself benefits socio-economically due to the presence of a number of large local retail centres such as Tesco, Dunnes Stores and Penneys along with the CUH, CIT and a number of restaurants and bars in the centre of Bishopstown that cater for its large student population.

The IDA Ireland centre and the FÁS Employment centre also benefit the region along with local business parks at Sarsfield Road and on Model Farm Road. Among the companies with a base there, Boston Scientific is the most significant.
