Brekke Church (Norwegian: Brekke kyrkje) is a parish church in Gulen Municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is located in the village of Brekke. The church is part of the Brekke parish in the Nordhordland deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church, which has 390 seats, was consecrated on 19 November 1862 by the local Dean Thomas Erichsen. The architect Christian Henrik Grosch made the designs for the church, which is the third church on the site.[1][2][3]

History

In the Middle Ages, a stave church was located on the Haugland farm (just south of the village of Brekke). This church was first mentioned in historical records in 1327. In 1590, the church was moved to the village of Brekke, just up the hill from the shoreline. This was the first church that bore the name Brekke Church. In 1686, the wooden church was probably located exactly where the present church is located. That building was referred to as a log building with tower. It was described as in poor condition and uneven. The church had only room for 130 people and it was less than half of what the law required. The Church Act of 1851, instructed the local authorities to ensure that the churches should have room for at least 10% of the population of the parish. This (eventually) led to the old church being torn down and replaced by the present church building in 1862.[4]
