S. Brock Blomberg is a macroeconomist and former Professor of economics at Claremont McKenna College. On July 1, 2015 he became the 17th president of Ursinus College.[1] Blomberg is best known in academia for his work on the economics of terrorism and is an investigator for CREATE at University of Southern California with a blog.[2]
Early life and education
Blomberg was born in El Paso, Texas, the son of an Army officer who spent much of his early years moving from place to place.[3] He graduated from The University of Tampa magna cum laude in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. He spent the next several years working on his Doctor of Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University. He worked as an intern economist for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 1992, foreshadowing his later position as a staff economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Career
Prior to his appointment as president of Ursinus College, he served as the Dean of the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance at Claremont McKenna College, where he received the David Huntoon Senior Teaching Award. Previously he has held appointments on the President's Council of Economic Advisors, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, Harvard University and Wellesley College. He also served in the United States Military for eight years and been the United States representative to the Economic Committee for Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).[4]
Macroeconomics Consequences of Terrorism
Over the past 20 years, he has published over 30 articles and book chapters in such top economics journals as the American Economic Review, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Public Economics and the Review of Economics and Statistics.[5]
His research shows that terrorism has a modest but statistically significant impact on the economy and trade is one area particularly sensitive to attacks.[6][7] He estimates the cost of the September 11 attacks to be approximately $60 billion.[8] The responsiveness of policy-makers and the resiliency of the United States economy are two reasons these impacts are not larger.[9]
Innovations in Education
Shortly after Claremont McKenna College (CMC) graduated its first class of masters students in Finance in 2010, Blomberg became Dean. The one year Master's Degree has been seen as a new alternative in graduate education.[10] Over the next few years, the CMC also began offering an accelerated degree so that students could earn both bachelor's and master's degrees over a four-year period. "CMC joins Stanford University, Harvard University, Northwestern University, Emory University and Brandeis University as one of just six schools to offer a four-year B.A./M.A. program, according to the online newspaper The Strategic Sourceror."[11] These programs along with similar accelerated programs have led to speculation that the master's is the new bachelor's degree.[12]
In 2012, the Claremont Colleges enrolled the first off-campus study program in Silicon Valley. The Silicon Valley program is affiliated with the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance and allows students to complete a full-time internship at a technology company, along with two academic courses and a research paper related to the internship for a total of four academic credits.[13]
On April 30, 2015, Ursinus College, a liberal arts college in southeastern Pennsylvania, announced that Blomberg would become the 17th President of the College.[14]
