History
The Canadian Institute of Management is Canada’s senior professional management association and academic institute. It was founded in 1942 as the Society of Industrial Methods Engineers and in 1946 became the Canadian Industrial Management Association. Becoming a multidisciplinary organization, it settled on its current identity in 1970. As a Federally Chartered not-for-profit organization, the CIM operates through 16 chapters across Canada. The CIM has a long history of servicing managers and aspiring managers within Canadian industry. Since its foundation, the CIM has provided professional development and certification to over 75,000 managers and grants several well-recognized professional and academic qualifications.
Mandate
The Canadian Institute of Management promotes management development supporting its members through publishing: a widely read quarterly periodical entitled The Canadian Manager; a weekly newsbrief called Management Matters; and an online mentoring program, CONNECTIONS. The CIM also provides a framework for networking and knowledge exchange via its local chapters across the country
National Accreditation
The Canadian Institute of Management accredits full-time programs within Canadian colleges, polytechnics and universities as meeting the academic requirements for the Certified in Management and Professional Manager post-nominal designations.
Certificate in Supervisory Management
The Canadian Institute of Management and partner institutions offer a 4-course Certificate in Supervisory Management (CSM) consisting of the following courses:
- Introduction to Management
- Managerial Communications
- Canadian Business Law
- Optional Course
A special Framework exists for Canadian Professional Engineers and Certified Engineering and Applied Science Technicians and Technologists to obtain the CSM qualification.
Certificate in Management and Administration Studies
The Canadian Institute of Management offers the Certificate in Management and Administration Studies through Distance Education, or through various CIM partner institutions across Canada; consisting of the following curriculum:

Designations
The Canadian Institute of Management offers the following post-nominal designations:

Certified in Management (C.I.M.)
The Certified in Management (C.I.M.) designation is awarded upon completion of the 8-course Certificate in Management and Administration Studies and two years of verified managerial experience. The academic requirement for the C.I.M. designation are offered through the CIM and partner institutions across Canada.
Professional Manager (P.Mgr.)
The Professional Manager (P.Mgr.) designation denotes an academic and practical Canadian experience background which will permit businesses to look at the holders of this designation with confidence as to their management skills. The P.Mgr. designation can be achieved through a variety of routes such as EMBA, BBA, BComm, or C.I.M. qualifications supplemented with extensive verified managerial experience. There is also a route for those without formal qualifications in management that possess extensive experience and a special route for Canadian Chartered Professional Accountants.
The P.Mgr. designation provides, for the first time in the management profession, the identification of individuals from various specialty disciplines who meet an established set of criteria reflecting high standards of professional integrity, work performance and recognition.
Chartered Manager (C.Mgr.)
The Chartered Manager (C.Mgr.) designation recognizes senior-level management training and academic competency and is most suitable for holders of research-oriented MBA, MMSc, MComm, DBA or PhD degrees in Business Administration or Management, or for those that have completed undergraduate degrees, diplomas or certificates, supplemented with additional requirements. Academic preparation must be supported by senior managerial experience, letters of support, letters of reference, and a statement of interest. An examination may be required.
Chartered Manager is the Canadian Institute of Management’s senior management qualification and chartered professional designation. It is abbreviated as C.Mgr. and used as a post-nominal to accredited members in good standing. The designation also gives the holders an exclusive right to use the full title of "Chartered Manager" in Canada. It provides validation to outstanding adherence to the theory and practice of ethical management and the ongoing development of new methods in the management arts and sciences that focus on sustainability and leadership. It goes beyond academic qualification and provides clients with a benchmark of professionalism and ethical behaviour in business.
Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Management (F.CIM)
The Fellowship Designation is an honorary award to individuals with a record of distinction and achievement in their community, locally, regionally and nationally.
