Canton, Iowa

Canton is a small unincorporated community in Jackson County, Iowa in the United States. It is located near the west county line, near the border of Jones County on the Maquoketa Caves Road where the road crosses the South Fork of the Maquoketa River.

In the mid-19th century, Canton contained a flouring mill, a saw mill and a woolen factory powered by the waters of its river.[1]

The town once had a population of approximately 2,000 people, but when the railroad bypassed Canton in favor of the city of Maquoketa, the population plummeted.
