Center for Effective Government

The Center for Effective Government, formerly OMB Watch, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that exists to increase government transparency and accountability; to ensure sound, equitable regulatory and budgetary processes and policies; and to protect and promote active citizen participation in the United States democracy.

History

OMB Watch was formed by Gary Bass in 1983 to lift the veil of secrecy shrouding the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). While OMB's actions were having an enormous impact on agency operations and the pursuit of social justice, OMB Watch believed that it remained largely behind the scenes, unaccountable, and little understood by the public and public interest groups.

OMB Watch changed its name to Center for Effective Government in January 2013. In March 2016, the center joined the Project On Government Oversight (POGO).[1]

Work

Center for Effective Government concentrates on four main areas: the role of government; information and access; budget, taxation and government performance; and regulatory policy.[2] Center for Effective Government's goal is to improve access to decision-makers and energize citizen participation. Charity Navigator rates Center for Effective Government with four stars out of four possible for financial performance, accountability and transparency.[3]

Media

The Center's reports have been used by newspapers, such as Politico, when it quoted CEG's second annual performance analysis of the 15 government agencies' processing the most Freedom of Information Act (United States) requests[4] and NGO's like Immigration Impact[5] and in complaints or lawsuits, such as Brown et al. v. U.S. Customs and Border Protection.[5]

Comments by staff have been quoted in newspapers such as Jeff Hauser, who leads CEG's Revolving Door Project, in the Fiscal Times[6] or Nick Schwellenbach, senior fiscal policy analyst in CNN.[7]

Congressional testimony

CEG has given testimony, submitted comments, statements and questions for the record, to Congress and other governmental bodies, archived on their website.[8]
