Winnie Harlow (born Chantelle Brown-Young; July 27, 1994) is a Canadian fashion model, spokesperson and activist. Harlow was a former contestant on the twenty-first cycle of the US reality television series America's Next Top Model. She is the current brand ambassador for the Barcelona-based casual clothing brand Desigual, along with Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima. Harlow is known for her prominent form of the skin condition vitiligo, using her career as a platform to spread messages of body positivity as well as raising awareness about vitiligo and equality.

Early life

Harlow was born on July 27, 1994, in Toronto, Ontario, to Lisa Brown and Windsor Young.[1] She is of Jamaican ancestry, and has two sisters.[3] She was diagnosed with the chronic skin condition vitiligo, characterized by portions of the skin losing their pigment, at the age of four. Harlow was a victim of verbal abuse by other children and was reportedly called a "cow, zebra and all manner of other disparaging slurs" throughout her childhood.[1] The verbal harassment led to her numerous changing of schools and finally dropping out of high school, after which she contemplated suicide.[1][4] However, Harlow reports that she has since accepted her appearance and ignores the negative opinions of others.[1]

Career

Modeling

Harlow's first success as a model came in 2013 when YouTube personality Shannon Boodram saw her pictures on Facebook and asked to shoot Harlow for her YouTube music video "Natural Me".[4]

In 2014, Harlow participated in the twenty-first cycle of America's Next Top Model, where she was revealed to have been discovered by the reality television show's creator and host Tyra Banks whilst she was on Instagram.[5] Harlow was originally eliminated from the cycle on the fourth episode.[6] However, the cycle allowed eliminated contestants to continue to participate in photo shoots and gain public votes so that the eliminated contestant with the highest public vote average would be allowed to return and continue competing. She and fellow eliminated contestant Ben Schreen returned on the ninth episode as the former contestants with the highest public vote average.[7] Of the two, Harlow was revealed on the tenth episode to have achieved the highest public vote average out of the eliminated participants.[7] She was permanently eliminated from the twenty-first cycle on the thirteenth episode, ultimately placing sixth.[7]

Following her permanent elimination from the series, Harlow modeled for the Spanish casual clothing brand Desigual and became their official brand representative;[8][9] she said in an interview with the New York Post, "Desigual stands for being unusual and unique and atypical, so they figured I'd be the perfect person for that. They had a new line that had a lot of dots. And some of my skin patterns are dots. In the campaign video, there’s a part where the dot on a scarf lines up perfectly with a dot I have on my waist, and I thought that was the coolest thing ever."[10]

Later that year, Harlow walked and closed for the clothing brand Ashish's Spring/Summer of 2015 fashion show during London Fashion Week.[10] She modeled for fashion magazines such as i-D and Dazed.[11] And modeled for the fashion website SHOWStudio. Harlow also appeared in the music video "Guts Over Fear" by Eminem featuring Sia, from Eminem's compilation album SHADYXV, released on August 25, 2014.

In 2015, Harlow modeled for the Italian clothing brand Diesel for its Spring/Summer campaign.[12] The ads were shot by British fashion photographer Nick Knight and featured Harlow together with seven other models.[8] She modeled for two foreign editions of the women's magazine Glamour in a five-page spread[13][14] and was featured in the August/September issue of Complex magazine.[15] She was also featured in the August 2015 issue of Cosmopolitan.[16] She was featured on the website of Vogue Italia in an interview and accompanying photo shoot.[17] In August 2015, Harlow shot for the cover and an accompanying editorial spread in the September issue of Ebony magazine, where she appeared alongside several other models, including Diandra Forrest, Marquita Pring, Milan Dixon, Samantha Archibald and former America's Next Top Model contestant Fatima Siad.[18]

In 2016, Harlow was featured in a Sprite commercial.[19] Filmed in December 2015, Harlow also appeared in the new visual album Lemonade, by Beyonce, released on April 23, 2016.

As a spokesperson

In 2011, Harlow posted a YouTube video, "Vitiligo: A Skin Condition, not a Life Changer", where she shared her story and answered questions about what it’s like to have vitiligo.[8] In November 2014, Harlow was enlisted to deliver a TED Talk presentation recalling her experience with vitiligo and her perspective on fashion, image, and understanding beauty.[4] In 2015, Harlow spoke at the 'Dove Self-Esteem Project Panel' at the 2015 Women in the World Foundation Annual Summit. She also released a personal essay about bullying, abuse, and her vitiligo. She was presented with the 'Role Model' award at the Portuguese GQ Men of The Year Event.
