Colleen McGill is a Canadian designer who has gained international recognition for her work.[1] She is a principal in the Architectural and Interior Design firm McGill Design Group Inc., based in Toronto, which has been involved in high-end residential interior design projects around the world. She is also a member of the Leaders of Design Council (LDC) - an exclusive membership body of the top architects and designers in the U.S.[2]
In 2012 McGill launched her own furniture line called Plum Furniture [3] which features a collection of fine upholstered furniture along with case goods and accessories.[4]
Elle Decor (USA) Magazine's popular Editorial feature titled "What's Hot" has featured two of Colleen McGill's Plum Furniture pieces. The first in August 2015 [5] and again in the June 2016 issue.
Colleen McGill is the only Canadian to be included in Designers House along with celebrity designers Aerin Lauder, Celerie Kemble, Alexa Hampton, Jeffrey Alan Marks [6] (from the show Million Dollar Decorators) and Suzanne Kasler - a site which showcases the world's elite designers work and their collections.[7]
Most recently one of her designs was featured on the show HGTV's Top 10 which highlights the top 10 Rooms in North America, and her work is regularly featured in Canadian House and Home magazine. In Canadian House and Home's 20th Anniversary issue McGill was listed in their "IT LIST" of designers whose work had graced their pages most often over the past decade.
In an October 2014 segment called "Inside Design" which has previously featured designers such as Christian Louboutin, Jonathan Adler, Nate Berkus and India Hicks Canada's Style at Home Magazine interviewed Colleen McGill to recognize her growing design success internationally. [8]
In the 2010 Spring edition of HOMEFRONT Magazine, Jeffrey Fisher a contributor to the National Post magazine conducted an interview with Colleen titled "Sitting Down with Colleen McGill".[9]
McGill was a featured designer in the book titled "Spectacular Homes of Toronto" [10] and Toronto Life Magazine consistently recognizes her as one of the best in the business and consults her regularly to provide decorating advice to its readers .[11]
Career
Before starting McGill Design Group in 1996, McGill worked for Joe Brennan and Danny Greenglas (JF Brennan Custom Homes Inc.) in Toronto where she had the opportunity to help design homes in Toronto and Palm Beach for some of Canada's most notable families: Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman, the Bitove's and Newcourt Capital founder Steve Hudson. She has designed primary residences and vacation properties for a host of well known clients including former GAP Inc. Chairman and CEO Glenn Murphy and retired CP Rail CEO Robert J. Ritchie (railroad executive).
Background
Colleen McGill grew up in the Westmount area of Montreal but was born in Kingston, Jamaica while her father John McGill was there helping to start Air Jamaica on behalf of Air Canada where he worked as an Executive Vice President.[12]
McGill attended the private school Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School in Montreal before first earning a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario and then graduating with her bachelor's degree in Interior Design from Ryerson University in Toronto.
Personal
McGill dedicates some of her spare time to Project Sunshine a nonprofit organization that provides free educational, recreational, and social programs to children facing medical challenges and their families.
Her paternal grandfather Frank McGill was a prominent member of Canada's military, having been an Air Vice Marshall in the RCAF, and a considerable sports figure, amongst other things a star football player in the Canadian Football League. Frank McGill was elected to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1959 [13] and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1965 as a player [14]
