College Mound, Missouri

College Mound is an unincorporated community in southwestern Macon County, Missouri, United States. It was settled in 1853 and later incorporated, but has since been disincorporated. It was named for a college located there It formerly had a post office, but that has closed and mail now comes from Excello. As said by the Encyclopedia of the history of Missouri, the town had been home to McGee College, a private college, founded on October 10, 1854. Also known by a bank card found on eBay, College Mound had a bank around 1926, known as the College Mound Security Bank. College Mound, before the Civil War, had around 1,000 people living in the area. There is now a helicopter pad between the old boarding house and the cemetery. As well, the old white school has become the community center. The town also has its own fire station which is also used for Bevier, a neighboring town. The Church of God was once used as an orphanage.
