The College of Engineering and Management, Kolaghat (CEMK) is a government-aided engineering college in KTPP Township, Kolaghat, West Bengal. The college was conceived by Professor Shankar Sen, an educationist and former vice chancellor of Jadavpur University, in 1998. Courses are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and approved by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.

The college is financed under the World Bank TEQIP II programmer for modernising labs. It has a campus area of 26.925 acres (108,960 m2) and is fully residential. The college offers full-time engineering programs leading to four-year B.Tech degree from West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT).[4]

The college started with affiliation to Vidyasagar University, but in 2001 when WBUT was formed, CEMK came under its roof.[5]

It is ranked among the best engineering colleges in West Bengal due to its good infrastructure, faculty, student life and campus placement.

History and administration

The college was established in 1998 by the Vidyasagar Society for Integrated Learning, Kolkata with assistance from West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL). Professor S.K. Sen, former vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University, a doyen of engineering education and ex-minister-in-charger of Power, Science and Technology and Non-conventional Energy Sources, Government of West Bengal is associated with the college as its advisor.

A well-represented governing body comprising renowned educationists, top-level managers from industries and senior education administrators manage the affairs of the college. Their love for education and research with their monitoring of the status and progress has enabled the college to establish its reputation as one of the front-ranking institutions of the country.

The college is in the Kolaghat Thermal Power Project Township (KTPP) at Kolaghat in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal.

Courses offered

The college is awaiting the approval of M.Tech course in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Engineering).

Infrastructure

West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (a Government of West Bengal undertaking), a power generation company in West Bengal, has provided 26.925 acres (108,960 m2) of land along with the some infrastructural facilities that include the administrative building, library, boys and girls' hostels, and staff quarters.

The Central Library began in 1998, serving the academic needs of about 1450 UG students and research scholars, nearly 130 faculty members, and about 40 administrative and medical staff. While all journal subscriptions are available in the present form, some are available in CD-ROM form also.

The automated library uses computerisation for circulation of books and browsing of some journals. A user is provided single barcoded identity card, The entire book collection is barcoded and important in-house functions like acquisition, cataloging and circulation are automated using the LibSys automation software. Some journals, the journal database and the book database are available on the institute network for browsing purposes. The library has a license for online access for major journals.

Awards and recognitions

Student life

The college provide boys’ and girls’ hostels. All fourth-year students are given single room. Meritorious third-year students also get single room. The college has an excellent cricket, football and volleyball courts. Indoor games in each common room are having table tennis, carrom and badminton court.

The annual cultural festival of the college, “SPANDAN,” and its annual technology fest, "RESONANCE," are celebrated for three days. Students participate in other cultural activities organised by the KTPP Township.

The college was in the news during 2000 to 2005 for its notorious ragging in hostels. In recent years college authorities came up with a very strict anti-ragging rules including a one-year suspension and even rustication from the college.

NCC unit

The National Cadet Corps for senior division (SD) boys and Senior Wing (SW) girls' introduced at College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat, on 10 September 2004. The college unit is under 55 Bengal Battalion NCC, Tamluk. The college NCC has been undertaking many extracurricular activities like outdoor exercises, social services, and camps and courses of the NCC Directorate like National Integration Camp, Combined Annual Training Camp, Annual Training Camp.
