The Colt Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps is an Open Class (formerly Division II/III) competitive junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Dubuque, Iowa, the corps is a member of Drum Corps International and is the feeder corps for the World Class (formerly Division I) Colts Drum and Bugle Corps.[1]
History
In the Fall of 1966, the Colts, then known as the Legionnaires formed a cadet "feeder" corps named the Legionnaires B Drum and Bugle Corps. Sonia Hickson was the first director of the Cadets, and she was assisted by members of the "A" corps. In 1969, the Legionnaires changed their name to the Colt .45, and the Legionnaires B became the Colt .45 Cadets. When the Colts dropped the .45 in 1976, the feeder corps took its present name of the Colt Cadets, although they were frequently referred to as the Colts, Too. Although the "A" corps had become a field competition corps the year before the "B" corps was founded, the Cadets performed only in parades and stand-still exhibitions for many years. During the 1980s the Colt Cadets also went onto the competition, entering shows in the Cadet Corps International, Illinois-All American Drum Corps Association, and Drum Corps Midwest circuits. The Cadets attended their first Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championships at Kansas City in 1988. In 2010–15 the Colt Cadets were finalists in the DCI Open Class World Championships in Michigan City, Indiana.[2][3]
Sponsorship
The Colt Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps is sponsored by the Colts Youth Organization, a 501(c)(3) musical organization that has a Board of Directors, corps director, and staff assigned to carry out the organization's mission. The Executive Director is Jeff MacFarlane, and the Corps Director is Matt Mulvanny.[4][5] The Colts Youth Organization also sponsors the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps;[6] Vocal Fusion, a singing group for students in grades 3 through 8;[7] PanrhythmiX and Pandemonium, steel drum performance groups for elementary and middle school students;[8] and the Colts Summer Band for students in grades 4 through 8.[9]
