Crossocheilus periyarensis is a species of fish in the family Cyprinidae, the carps and minnows, known commonly as the Periyar latia.[1] It was described in 1996 from the Periyar River in Kerala, India.[2] It occurs in Periyar National Park.[1]
This is a freshwater fish up to 11.5 centimeters long.[3] It lives in deep, fast-flowing river waters over rocky and sandy substrates, and it can sometimes be found in still waters. It feeds on algae.[1]
The fish has a restricted distribution and it is threatened by introduced species of fish, such as the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and the common carp (Cyprinus carpio).[1]
