Dan Reinstein
Dan Reinstein is a specialist ophthalmic surgeon in the UK and is a board-certified registered specialist ophthalmologist in the USA, Canada and the UK, specialising in the field of refractive surgery (vision correction). He is medical director of the London Vision Clinic and a voluntary faculty member as Professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.[1]
Education and early career
Dan Reinstein was educated at Leighton Park School before completing his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Cambridge. His postgraduate qualifications include M.A.(Cantab), M.B. B.Chir and MD degrees. He undertook extensive post-doctorate fellowship sub-specialty training in refractive surgery, having completed a Research Fellowship in Ophthalmic Epidemiology (Institute of Ophthalmology/Moorfields Eye Hospital, UCL Medical School, London 1991), a Fellowship in Ophthalmic Bioengineering (Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, New York 1994), his Residency in Ophthalmology (Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York 1996), a Refractive Surgical Fellowship as the Paul Kaiser Scholar for 1997 (under laser eye surgeons Roberto Zaldivar, Maria-Clara Arbelaez, Alberto Chacon, and Jose Barraquer) and held the position of Fellow in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at the University of British Columbia, Canada from 1997-1999. Mr Reinstein is recognized by three sub-specialty bodies: he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) (FRCSC), Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of the United Kingdom (FRCOphth), and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (DABO). He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO) and a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO).
Career and research
Dan Reinstein is an experienced and accomplished research scientist in the field of laser eye surgery and makes major contributions to the field. He holds a number of patents in techniques or technology relating to laser eye surgery technology and high-frequency ultrasound bioengineering.
During several years of research in ultrasound bioengineering at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University Mr Reinstein led the development of the Artemis VHF digital ultrasound technology - the most accurate diagnostic technology for measuring and studying the individual corneal layers as well as ocular dimensions of the anterior segment with one micrometre precision. He has pioneered the application of the Artemis technology to the understanding of LASIK safety and accuracy, and is recognised as one of the leading authorities in the repair of the complications of LASIK. He developed Laser blended vision - the LASIK treatment for presbyopia (ageing eyes) now distributed as by Carl Zeiss AG in their MEL80 laser platform. Professor Reinstein has also developed new algorithms for the safe treatment of very high refractive error by LASIK. Professor Reinstein has joint patents,[2][3][4] with Carl Zeiss Meditec, being closely involved in developing the newest minimally invasive refractive surgery procedure called Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (ReLEx SMILE) that uses the VisuMax femtosecond laser to create a refractive lenticule within the stroma which is then removed through a small incision (http://www.meditec.zeiss.com/relex). In 2006, Professor Reinstein together with Dr. Cynthia Roberts instigated and headed the Biomechanics Section of the Journal of Refractive Surgery.[5] As a result of his unique imaging and biometric capabilities using the Artemis VHF digital ultrasound technology he developed,[6] Professor Reinstein is said to have become one of the world's foremost authorities on Therapeutic Refractive Surgery - the diagnosis and treatment of complications of refractive surgery. He possesses exceptional expertise and experience accrued as the former Chief Medical Officer of a group of clinics across North America in which high standards of care and surgical systematization enabled over 100,000 procedures to be performed in one year by 58 surgeons in 28 clinics and is the first to publish a peer-reviewed scientific paper on the quality control statistics in a large sample of over 46,000 eyes treated by LASIK. Professor Dan Reinstein has published over 100 articles in peer reviewed medical journals, contributed to or written over 40 book chapters / published proceedings, and over 150 articles for the Ophthalmic Press. He has presented or published over 250 scientific papers or abstracts and has participated as an invited speaker or instructor in over 450 courses and symposia at professional meetings on five continents. He has been a moderator or panelist at over 70 scientific international meeting panels.
Dan Reinstein is recognized as a pioneer in vision correction surgery which includes LASIK, PRK / LASEK, ReLEx SMILE and phakic IOLs for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. He is also known as a leading authority on the correction of complications of laser eye surgery and has developed the most sensitive method for early diagnosis of keratoconus, and was one of the early adopters of modern keratoconus treatments including Intacs, and corneal collagen cross-linking with riboflavin.
Music
Alongside his medical career, Dan Reinstein has regularly played the saxophone for over 35 years. His musical training includes two years of study on a performance scholarship at the Berklee College of Music, in Boston. Despite his busy medical career, he continues to play jazz on a monthly basis at the 606 Club in Chelsea, London. He discovered a way of combining his surgical and medical passions: performing LASIK for presbyopia on many of his jazz idols; he has operated on many jazz greats including John McLaughlin (musician), Branford Marsalis, Peter Erskine, Billy Cobham, Béla Fleck, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith (musician), Ron Carter, Randy Brecker, Tom Coster, Bill Evans (saxophonist), Ric Fierabracci, Victor Bailey, Jojo Mayer, Jerry Bergonzi, Dean Brown (guitarist), Warren Hill (musician), Rachel Z, Robben Ford, Michael Colina, Morris Pleasure (Earth, Wind & Fire), Dave Samuels, Sean Rickman, Payton Crossley, Werner “Vana” Gierig, Bonnie Tyler, Brian Bennett of the Shadows and many others.
Television appearances
Dan Reinstein has appeared frequently on television as the eye laser specialist for Extreme Makeover UK, 10 Years Younger (UK), BBC Breakfast News, SKY News, and BBC Radio 4 have interviewed him. He appeared on This Morning (TV series) on ITV for his Laser blended vision technique which was subsequently performed live on presenter Phillip Schofield. The Times, The Sunday Times Magazine, and The Evening Standard have featured him as an expert in laser eye surgery.
Personal life
Married to Austrian veterinarian Ursula Reinstein (née Heczko), he has three children (Julia, Maxwel and Oscar) and lives in central London. He is medical director or the London Vision Clinic (http://www.londonvisionclinic.com) or http://www.londonvisionclinic.com/why-lvc/professor-dan-reinstein.php.
