The New York Times has referred to Burrus as one of the top three business gurus in the highest demand as a speaker.[13] Additionally, his methodology for separating Hard Trends[14] (trends that will happen) from Soft Trends (trends that might happen)[15] has been the subject of several PBS television specials.[16]

Life and times

Burrus was born at Portland, Oregon in 1947. He grew up in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. He attended the Wisconsin State University-Oshkosh and graduated in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree. In 1971, Burrus and fellow student Bill Gray, during their senior year, were awarded a research grant for $9,800 from the United States Department of Education to establish a student training assistance program. He was co-director along with Bill Gray of the first federally funded program of its kind in the nation and a first with undergraduate directors.[19] The program offered free tutoring for collegians with deficiencies in specific academic subjects, sample test files, class notes, textbook exchange, general information and referral, assistance in registration, and help in selection of courses and teachers.[19][20]

After graduation from college, Burrus became a science teacher. Within the first three months of teaching, he was nominated for an Educator of the Year Award.[21] He taught science from 1971 to 1978. He went on to start six companies. Burrus is a member of the National Speakers Association and is a Certified Speaking Professional. An article in the New York Times in 1995 described Burrus as one of the top three business gurus in the highest demand as a speaker along with Roger Blackwell and Tom Peters.[13] According to the New York Times:[13]

"Gurus of the moment on these topics are Tom Peters, the former McKinsey consultant and best-selling author, who discusses ways for corporations to cope with change; Roger Blackwell, the Ohio State University marketing professor who specializes in how to do business in a global marketplace, and Daniel Burrus, the futurist who talks about how a vision of times ahead can shape business decisions today."
