Daniel Richard "Danny" Green (born 9 July 1988) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for League Two club Luton Town.
Career
Early career
Green started his career as a youth player for Charlton Athletic before being released at the age of 15. Green then signed for Northampton Town, earning his first professional contract, but moved to Nottingham Forest a year later. In 2008 Green was released by Forest and signed for Conference South club Bishop's Stortford.[3]
Dagenham & Redbridge
In May 2009, Green signed for League Two club Dagenham & Redbridge on a free transfer.[4][5] Green made his debut for the club in a 2–1 away win over Crewe Alexandra on 8 August 2009.[6] He was replaced in the 75th-minute by substitute Wes Thomas.[6] He scored 14 goals from midfield,[7] including one at Wembley Stadium to help Dagenham to promotion to League One via the play-offs.[8] On 25 July 2010, he and team-mate Scott Doe committed themselves to Dagenham by signing new three-year contracts.[9] Dagenham were relegated back to League Two the following season, but Green was one of the club's stand-out performers, scoring 11 goals in the league and two in the FA Cup.[10]
Charlton Athletic
On 29 June 2011, Green was signed by his former youth club Charlton Athletic for a fee of £350,000, signing a three-year contract.[11][12] He helped Charlton win the League One title, thus gaining promotion to the Championship in his first season, making 32 appearances, scoring 3 goals.[10][13] Green thereafter struggled to hold down a first-team position. On 2 September 2013, Green agreed a six-week loan deal with MK Dons.[14] On 22 May 2014, he was released from Charlton Athletic after making 74 first-team appearances for the club.[15]
Milton Keynes Dons
One day later, Green returned to MK Dons, signing a two-year contract.[16] He made 18 appearances in all competitions during the 2014–15 season, scoring twice, as MK Dons won promotion to the Championship.[10]
On 3 July 2015, MK Dons agreed to cancel Green's contract a year early.[17]
Luton Town
A day after his release by MK Dons, Green signed a two-year contract with League Two club Luton Town, linking back up with manager John Still who had first signed him from Bishop's Stortford in 2009.[18]
Green made his debut for the club in a 1–1 draw with Accrington Stanley on 8 August 2015.[19] He scored his first goals for Luton in consecutive games, opening the scoring in a 2–1 home win over Leyton Orient in the Football League Trophy on 1 September 2015,[20] before netting the final goal in a 3–1 away win over Cambridge United four days later.[21] His next goal came over two months later, opening the scoring in a 2–0 home win over Barnet on 14 November 2015, assisted by Josh McQuoid.[22] Green added a further goal to his tally ten days later, scoring a volley from 20 yards in a 4–3 home defeat to Carlisle United.[23] On 12 December 2015, he netted a penalty kick after a foul on Craig Mackail-Smith in another 4–3 home defeat, on this occasion to Northampton Town.[24] Green scored a second goal in as many games when he slammed a first-time shot through Exeter City goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik in a 3–2 away win one week later.[25] On 30 April 2016, Green suffered a double leg break during a 2–0 away defeat to Northampton Town and would miss the final game of the season.[26][27] He made a total of 30 appearances in all competitions during the 2015–16 season, scoring six goals.[28]
