David Brough (born June 22, 1962) is an award-winning British journalist and former foreign correspondent who specialises in agriculture, diamonds and jewellery. A Senior Correspondent at Thomson Reuters in London, Brough is one of the world’s leading writers about sugar and coffee futures and physical markets. He is co-founder and Editor of digital jewellery trade magazine Jewellery Outlook.

Brough has contributed diamond, jewellery and watches articles to Retail Jeweller, Professional Jeweller, The Jeweller, Forbes India, Adorn Insight, and Antwerp Diamond Trade Fair. Brough has also written news articles for Reuters about diamonds and jewellery.

He has moderated seminars about jewellery, precious metals and gemstone markets at leading UK jewellery trade fairs, including International Jewellery London (IJL)[1][2] and Jewellery & Watch Birmingham.[3][4] Brough co-founded and writes brand communications and blogs for Chelsea Cross, which represents more than 20 home design showrooms on Fulham Road, Chelsea, including antique and interior design retailers Apter-Fredericks, Godson and Coles, and Colefax and Fowler. Brough joined Reuters as a graduate trainee journalist in London in September 1985.

Career

Brough has worked as a Reuters correspondent and editor for more than 30 years, including 16 years as a foreign correspondent on postings in the United States, Ecuador, Venezuela, Cyprus, Portugal and Italy.[5] In Rome, Brough reported on the United Nations food agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development.) In his early Reuters career, Brough reported from conflict zones including the Contra war in Nicaragua and Honduras, and fiercely contested elections in Haiti in November 1987. He reported on the drugs war in Colombia in the late 1980s, as well as mining strikes in Peru and civil strife in Panama.

Awards

Brough was co-winner, with Brazilian journalist Marcelo Canellas, of the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) 2002/03 A. H. Boerma Award for steering public attention to world hunger issues.[6] The citation read, “David Brough, British journalist, [was co-winner] for highlighting how the UN agencies battle world hunger, bringing major development issues to the fore and increasing the public’s understanding of FAO’s work.”

Education

Brough won the Dr James. T. T. Ramsay Bursary to the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, in the 1981 competition. He graduated from the University of St. Andrews with an Upper Second Class M.A. Honours degree in Economics and French in 1985. He has a Certificate in Financial Markets from the Securities Institute of Australia. Brough is fluent in French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
