De Smet (also spelled Desmet) is an unincorporated census-designated place on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation in Benewah County, Idaho, United States. De Smet is located near U.S. Route 95 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Tensed. De Smet has a post office with ZIP code 83824.[2] As of the 2010 census, its population was 175.[3]

It was named for Belgian Father Pierre De Smet,[4] a 19th-century Jesuit missionary who worked with Native Americans in the United States and its territories for most of his life.

Climate

This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, De Smet has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.[5]
