Debbie Smith is a recurring character in Wentworth. Debbie is the daughter of main character Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack). Debbie’s storylines within the series were her relationship with Brayden Holt (Reef Ireland) and being murdered by Brayden at the orders of Jacs Holt (Kris McQuade). Debbie was portrayed by Georgia Flood.

Storylines

Backstory

Debbie was born to Harry and Bea Smith. Debbie had witnessed constant abuse to her mother by her father. When Bea attempted to murder Harry, Debbie helped cover it up by saying Harry attempted suicide.[1]

2013-14

Debbie is first seen when Bea remembers back to being arrested for the attempted murder of Harry. Debbie was distraught at seeing her mother be carted off. Debbie was held back by the police.[1]

Debbie is next seen in the second episode where Bea finally gets through to talk to Debbie on the phone.[2]

When Debbie goes to visit her mum in prison, she meets Brayden. Debbie has to be searched by Vera (Kate Atkinson) when a sniffer hound sniffs drugs on Debbie. Bea was unamused about the search being done on Debbie.[3]

Will (Robbie Magasiva) over sees Debbie and Brayden doing drugs when he is at his regular place to score. Debbie later receives a call about Bea being attacked by Jacs. When Debbie comes to see her mum, Erica (Leeanna Walsman) doesn’t let her in.[4]

Debbie has a conversation with her mum on the phone and confronts her mum about not being in contact for weeks. Debbie is shocked to learn that Bea was bashed. Later on in the episode, Brayden under his mother’s orders gives Debbie an overdose.[5]

Bea learns of Debbie’s death and tries to commit suicide when she isn’t allowed to attend the funeral. On Bea’s behalf Will visits Debbie’s body and gives a message Bea gave him to say to Debbie.[6]

Bea after being sentenced for murdering Jacs has dreams of Debbie due to being on anti-psychotic drugs. Bea and Debbie in the dream prepare for her formal. At the end of the episode, Bea makes her peace with Debbie and then swears that she is going to kill Brayden.[7]

Debbie's death is mentioned a fair bit during Season Two over how Bea was going to avenge Debbie.

Reception

When Debbie was murdered it was billed as a "shock death". [8]

A reviewer defined the episode Debbie died as a very brutal episode to watch.[9]

It was described as a gut punch when Bea wasn’t allowed to attend Debbie’s funeral.[10]
