The tenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who will begin filming in May 2016, for an airdate of 2017.[1] This series will be the tenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005, and will be the thirty-sixth season overall.

On 14 July 2015, BBC Worldwide's Annual Review revealed that it had invested in the tenth series.[2] The series will be the third series starring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, the most recent incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in his TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box on the outside. The series will introduce Pearl Mackie as Bill, the Doctor's newest traveling companion.[3]

The 12-episode series is expected to air in early 2017, preceded by a Christmas special in 2016.[1][4]

Casting

The tenth series will be the third starring Peter Capaldi as the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor. Following the departure of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald at the end of the ninth series, the 2016 Christmas Special will introduce Bill, a new companion for the Doctor, portrayed by Pearl Mackie, who will then become a full-time cast member in the tenth series.[3][5]

Writing and development

It was announced in January 2016 that Series 10 would be Steven Moffat's final series as showrunner, and will be replaced in the role by Chris Chibnall in 2018.[6]

Filming

The series will begin filming in May 2016.[1] Production for the tenth series will commence after the filming of the 2016 Christmas Special.[7] A preview scene has been filmed as of April 2016, as part of a promotional clip shown on 23 April 2016. It introduced the Doctor and his new companion, Bill, being faced with Daleks.[8]
