Dragoon Spring was a watering place on the Southern Emigrant Trail in what became the Gadsden Purchase, that became part of New Mexico Territory. Following the acquisition of the Gadsden Purchase, Dragoon Springs was first permanently occupied and used as a stagecoach station by the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line in 1857. From 1858 to 1861 it was used by the Butterfield Overland Mail.
During the American Civil War, it was the site of the First Battle of Dragoon Springs and near the site of the Second Battle of Dragoon Springs between Apache warriors and Confederate soldiers.
Adobe ruins and a cemetery for the settlement still remains to mark the site.
