'Elumalai (எழுமலை) is a Town Panchayat city in the district of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. The near by cities are Usilampatti.(16 km) and Peraiyur. Elumalai is a very beautiful town having located in the Western ghats, named as Aezhumalai meaning as ''Seven Hills'; Later that is changed to Elumalai. The town has many famous and old temples like vasi malayan temple, shri thiruvenkatanatha swami temple ,muthalamman temple, badrakali amman temple,sandana mariyamman temple and maathanthira shri subramania temple and Islam mosque, AG little Church.

Administration

The Elumalai city is divided into 18 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. Elumalai Town Panchayat has total administration over 4,224 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorize to build roads within Town Panchayat limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.

Education

According to Census of India 2011, only 58% of the total population is having literacy. Which is very lower than the State's literacy rate. The very old schools in this town were established by Government. Government Boys Higher secondary school, Government Girls Higher Secondary School and private partie's Bharathiyar Matric Higher Secondary School are giving education up to higher secondary level. Apart from that many of the shools giving elementary level education are Panchayat Union Primary School, Parayar Primary School, Vivekananda High School, Thiruvalluvar Primary School. The surrounding villages also have many primary schools.

Elumalai is located at 9°52′N 77°42′E / 9.87°N 77.7°E / 9.87; 77.7.[1] It has an average elevation of 208 metres (682 feet).

Demographics

The Elumalai Town Panchayat has population of 15,746 of which 7,890 are males while 7,856 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1725 which is 10.96% of total population of Elumalai (TP). In Elumalai Town Panchayat, Female Sex Ratio is of 996 against state average of 996. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Elumalai is around 974 compared to Tamil Nadu state average of 943. Literacy rate of Elumalai city is 65.15% lower than state average of 80.09%. In Elumalai, Male literacy is around 74.67% while female literacy rate is 55.60%.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Elumalai had a population of 14,030. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Elumalai has an average literacy rate of 56%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 45%. In Elumalai, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.It is surrounded by seven hills and it is famous for sathuragiri hill nearer to saptur.

As it was surrounded by seven hills it is filled with flora every where. Elumalai Vasimalayan mountain separate the madurai and theni district.Yearly once the september month the vasimalayan festive celebration is very famous and awesome.Those month every Saturday provide the Feeding from the vasimalayan temple.
