Loan moves

O'Connell signed for Oldham Athletic on 1 September 2015, on a loan which expired on 1 January 2016.[4] O'Connell made his Oldham debut against Bradford on 5 September and impressed playing as a right-back. After playing a further match, O'Connell picked up an injury in training and didn't play for Oldham again.[5] He returned to Celtic in November.[6]

In February 2016, O'Connell moved out on loan again, this time to his home-town club, League of Ireland side Cork City.[7] He made his debut on 27 February, playing the whole match as Cork defeated Dundalk 20 in the President's Cup.[8][9] He went on to play five times for Cork, scoring once in a 22 draw with Galway United, before being recalled to Celtic at the end of April 2016 following him sustaining a groin injury.[10]

International career

O'Connell made his Republic of Ireland U19 debut against Norway in August 2013.[11]

Personal life

O'Connell is the cousin of Irish rugby captain Paul O'Connell.[12]
