Nam Yoon-do (born November 17, 1988), better known by his stage name Eric Nam, is a Korean-American singer and television host currently based in South Korea.
He first appeared on Birth of a Great Star 2 in 2012 after being discovered from one of his cover songs on YouTube. He made his official debut with the mini-album Cloud 9 on January 23, 2013.
Early life
Eric Nam was born and raised in Atlanta to South Korean parents, and is the oldest son. He has two younger brothers, Brian and Eddie.[1] As a child, he became a member of the Atlanta Boy Choir and toured in Italy where he got to sing for mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.[2] He graduated from The Lovett School in 2007 where he played soccer and played in the orchestra. For his senior project, he recorded his own solo CD that was very popular with the student body. He then flew to Boston where he completed a Bachelor of International Studies at Boston College, studying in Beijing for a year during that time. He can speak Korean, English, Spanish and Chinese.[2]
Career
Pre-debut
After doing some covers on YouTube, a JYP representative suggested that he should go to a JYP audition in New York. However, he decided not to audition because during that time, he still had to focus on his studies.[3] In June 2011, a cover called "Eric Nam - ì—ë¦ë‚¨ - 2NE1 - Lonely! Male Version Cover" that he posted on YouTube was enough for MBC to fly him to Korea for an audition in person.
Eric Nam competed in the talent search show Birth of a Great Star 2 in December 2011. He stayed in the competition for about 8 months and made it to the Top 5.[4] After the show, he flew back to the USA and performed at Kollaboration Boston 2 on April 21, 2012. Kollaboration is a "nationwide talent competition that empowers Asian-Americans through entertainment."[2]
In June 2012, Eric Nam headed back to Korea for his project group Namaste's single "ì œì£¼ë„ì˜ í‘¸ë¥¸ë°¤" (The Blue Night of Jeju Island) which was released after a month.[5] He also became an MC at MBC Star Audition Season 3 that was held in August in New York.
On September 25, 2012, he joined B2M Entertainment as a solo artist.[6]
2013-14: Debut with Cloud 9, "Ooh Ooh", and "Melt My Heart"
On January 23, 2013, Eric Nam made his official debut with the mini-album Cloud 9 which contained the lead single "Heaven's Door".
On April 8, 2014, Eric Nam released the single "Ooh Ooh" which featured Hoya of Infinite. The accompanying music video also featured cameo appearances by Boa (Spica), Kevin (U-KISS), and Brad Moore (Busker Busker).[7]
On December 9, 2014, Eric Nam released the single "Melt My Heart".[8]
2015-present: "I'm OK", Interview, and We Got Married
In February 2015, Eric was featured on Amber Liu's mini-album Beautiful on the song "I Just Wanna". On March 5, 2015, he released the single "I'm OK" and its accompanying music video.[9]
On May 19, 2015, producer group Sweet Tune revealed that Eric Nam would release a single called "Dream" which features 15&‘s Jimin for Charity Project.[10]
In December 2015, Eric Nam signed an exclusive contract with CJ E&M after his three-year contract with B2M Entertainment expired.[11] B2M Entertainment still manages him as a producer.
On March 4, 2016, Eric Nam took part in SM Entertainment's digital music channel SM STATION by releasing "Spring Love", a duet track with Red Velvet's Wendy.[12]
On March 8, 2016 Eric Nam dropped a teaser image on his official Instagram and revealed that he would release his second mini-album Interview on March 24.[13] Eric Nam's second mini album "Interview" and the music video for its title track "Good For You" were released on March 24.[14] Eric Nam also release creative music video for track "Interview".[15]
In April 2016, he joined the virtual marriage show We Got Married with Solar from Mamamoo as his partner.[16]
Other works
He has done guest spots on Eatyourkimchi performing skits with Simon and Martina. He also hosted the Viki-sponsored red carpet during KCON 2014.[17] B2M Entertainment, the agency Eric Nam formerly belonged to, announced that Eric had been cast by a Hollywood movie company in March 2015.[18]
