Ewell Castle School is a co-educational Independent day school for boys aged 3–18 and girls aged 3–11 and 16–18. From September 2015, the school will welcome girls into the Senior School at the normal entry points of age 11 and 13. Founded in 1926 by Mr Herbert Budgell, originally as a boarding school, it is located in Ewell, Surrey. The school consists of the Main House (affectionately known by Ewellians as 'The Castle'), Glyn House and Chessington Lodge. Headteachers are Mrs M. Phillips (BEd) of the Junior School and Mr P. Harris MSc, BSc, PGCE, NPQH, who is Principal of the School.[1]
The school was last inspected in 2012.[2]
Ewell Castle will go fully coeducational from September 2015.
Tutors and teaching
Class sizes are small and typically might number 5 pupils in the Sixth Form. An average English or Maths class in GCSE years typically has about 16 pupils in it.
Houses
The school has three Houses: Castlemaine, Raleigh and Essex (colours orange, green and purple, respectively). When they start at the school, pupils are assigned to a house, and they remain in it throughout their school career. If a sibling of an Ewellian pupil were to join the school, they would be assigned to the same house.
Uniform
The school's uniform is a royal blue blazer, with grey trousers or skirt. The shirt changes colour as pupils move up the school: blue for the junior school and white for the senior school.
Sixth Form students are required to wear a charcoal grey or all-black suit.
Societies
At Ewell Castle, there are dozens of societies. The clubs range from Design, Sciences, Politics and Debating to Sports and recreation (e.g. Sailing, Duke of Edinburgh Award). In late 2008 a team from the school won first prize in the Epsom, Ewell and Banstead Schools’ Enterprise Challenge 2008.
Sports
The School has extensive grounds that include rugby, tennis and cricket pitches. There are also cricket nets and athletics facilities. The school has a large, modern, multi-purpose Sports Hall complex.
Sporting fixtures in a wide range of sports are played against other independent schools such as Charterhouse, City of London Freemen's School, Halliford School, St Paul's, King's College School, Epsom College and Reigate Grammar School.
Music and drama
Music
The entire lower floor of Glyn House is devoted to the school's many bands, choirs and solo artists, including the school's most popular band 'Ironic Smile'.
Drama
There are annual Drama productions and this year some of the pupils embarked on LAMDA exams.
