In the first round take part 6 teams shared in 2 group stage. They are one team from the host city, a NORCECA nominated team, and the four champions of continental tournaments - African Clubs Championship, South American Club Championship, CEV Champions League and Asian Club Championship. On occasion, the amount was increased through wild card invitees. The first 2 teams of each pool advance to the knockout round.
