FX Australia is an Australian subscription television channel which focuses on male-skewed television shows.[1] The channel is owned and operated by Fox International Channels and launched on 26 February 2012 on both Foxtel and Austar platforms.[2]

On 12 June 2012 it was reported that a two-hour timeshift channel (FX + 2) would launch on 3 July 2012,[3] but this was retracted for it to be later reported that it would launch on 6 September 2012.[note 1]

History

In 1995, FX originally launched in Australia as fX, featuring classic TV series (often branded as "Golden Years of Television")

In late 1998 fX became FX, which at the time was a channel aimed at women, unlike the international FX channels demographic, featuring shows such as The View and Donny and Marie. In late 2000, FX was again rebranded, officially becoming "Australia's first TV channel for women". On 1 November 2003, it was renamed W. as a way to make this focus more apparent.

On 9 October 2011 Fox International Channels released details that FX would relaunch in Australia early 2012 with long awaited programs such as The Walking Dead, Transporter: The Series, and Hell on Wheels.[1] The channel launched on 26 February on Foxtel and Austar.[2]

FX is in no way related to the channel fX that was in Australia previously. The original fX was owned by Foxtel, while the current FX is a channel owned and run by Fox International Channels (which operate National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild, and Nat Geo Adventure in Australia). Fox International Channels have the FX channel in most markets in the Western world.

Promotion

On Wednesday 2 February 2012, FX announced on their Facebook page that to kick off the channels re-launch there would be promotional zombie invasions in Australia's two largest capital cities, Sydney and Melbourne on Wednesday 8 February 2012 in the city centres.[4]
