Fair Haven Beach State Park
Fair Haven Beach State Park is on the shore of Lake Ontario. This park is in the Town of Sterling in Cayuga County, New York. The park is northeast of the Village of Fair Haven on the east side of Little Sodus Bay. The southern part of the park is sometimes called Fair Haven State Park.
Fair Haven Beach State Park is located in upstate New York on the eastern portion of the Lake Ontario shoreline. It includes towering shoreline bluffs, sandy beaches and adjoining hilly woodlands. Inland, Sterling Pond and Sterling Creek are centrally located amongst the geological transition between woods and water.
Park facilities
The park offers a beach on Lake Ontario, picnic tables and pavilions, a playground, a campground with tent and trailer sites, recreation programs, a nature trail, a boat launch and marina, boat rental, hiking, waterfowl hunting in season, fishing and ice-fishing, sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. The park features 1,500 feet (460 m) of sand beach including 600 feet (180 m) of guarded swim area. A ball field, hiking trail, camp store, concession, five picnic areas, two family picnic tent rentals and two shelters (one heated) are also offered, in addition to an 18-hole golf course.
Fishing and boating opportunities are available in Lake Ontario and the adjoining Little Sodus Bay. Boat rentals include row boats, paddle boats, canoes and kayaks which are only for use on the inland Sterling Pond waterway.
There are six full-service cabins and nine winterized cabins. Three separate campgrounds and a 30-unit cabin colony each contain a centralized restroom with showers. Two additional cabins and three cottages make up the self-contained units available for reservation. Campgrounds consist of 46 electric sites and 138 non-electric sites.
History
The camp was originally built by the CCC in the early 1930s and later by German POWs during its days as the Prison Camp at Fair Haven.[1]
