Fan is a 2016 Indian thriller film directed by Maneesh Sharma and featuring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role.[4][5] The film is produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films, and tells the story of an obsessive fan of a star who looks just like the star.[6] The soundtrack album and original score are composed by Vishal–Shekhar and Andrea Guerra respectively.[7] The film was released on 15 April 2016.

Plot

Gaurav Chadana (Shahrukh Khan) is a Delhi-based diehard fan of Bollywood superstar Aryan Khanna (also Shahrukh Khan). When Gaurav wins a local talent show competition impersonating his idol Aryan, he embarks on a journey to meet his idol in person and show him his winning trophy on his idol's birthday. Gaurav travels to Mumbai without a train ticket.

On Aryan’s birthday, Gaurav makes his way through the hostile crowd on the bustling streets of Mumbai just to meet his idol but is prevented by Aryan’s security guards, making it difficult to meet him. Later, Sid Kapoor, a fellow actor, expresses harsh comments towards Aryan criticising his loyalty towards new aspiring actors, which angers Gaurav. Gaurav ventures his way in Sid’s cabin and unleashes his fury on Sid, threatening him for an apology while been recorded. A helpless Sid obliges and the video is uploaded on the internet. Aryan’s PA shows him the video which he considers the actions of Gaurav a "crime". Aryan sends his personal car to retrieve Gaurav, instead Sid’s security guards arrive. Gaurav escapes but is eventually apprehended. Gaurav is sent to jail where he is mercifully beaten. Aryan arrives at the jail to secretly meet Gaurav. Aryan declares that Gaurav is not his fan. He also threatens Gaurav that he should never do that again and tells him to return home before leaving and that they never met or even talked. A disturbed Gaurav returns home and burns all of Aryan’s posters which engulfed the wall of his room. He vows to get revenge by destroying his stardom.

One year later in London, Gaurav heads to Madame Tussauds wax museum, impersonating Aryan, where he expresses his hatred towards Aryan. This triggers a havoc situation and the police arrest the real Aryan at his own home but manages to get bail. Aryan departs to Dubrovnik for a show, unaware Gaurav is also in Dubrovnik. Gaurav disguises himself as a back dancer to perform as an extra in Aryan’s performance. Aryan instructs his personnel to look out for Gaurav but eventually realises that he is part of the production team and not a guest. After thoroughly searching the building for his presence to no avail, Aryan rushes to his make-up to find "Gaurav makes Aryan" written on the mirror.

Aryan is later scheduled to perform at a billionaire’s wedding. Instead, Gaurav, disguised as Aryan again, arrives and dances with the billionaire’s daughter, eventually molesting her. The billionaire vents his anger towards the real Aryan asking him to leave. This results in a tarnished reputation and fans eventually boycotting his performances around the world. While departing, Aryan spots a "journalist" among a crowd of media. Aryan realises its Gaurav and eventually chases after him but Gaurav escapes. The molestation video goes viral and fans around the world expresses their hatred toward Aryan. Aryan declares in a press conference that he is being impersonated by someone else and advises the media to watch out for Gaurav as he can hurt anyone.

Back in India, Gaurav, posing as Aryan again, accesses Aryan’s home, vandalizing his trophy collection in the study room while imploring to Aryan’s wife (Waluscha de Sousa) why is Aryan not apologizing. Aryan arrives home moments later but Gaurav escapes leaving his wife traumatized. Aryan learns from Gaurav’s parents that Gaurav will be present at the local talent show. At the show, Aryan devises a plan with Gaurav’s love interest Neha to play along with him. Aryan, imitating Gaurav now, declares 'his" love to Neha. This event provokes Gaurav, who witnessed the act on a nearby stand, to fire at Aryan. After a long chase once again, Aryan subdues Gaurav and they starting fighting. With Aryan suffering minor wounds and Gaurav barely alive after a horrendous beating, Aryan tells Gaurav to end this all and tells him to live a life of Gaurav Chadana instead of "Junior Aryan Khanna". As Aryan is leaving, Gaurav tells him he said everything but still never apologise to him. He falls of the cliff but Aryan catches him declaring it does not have to end like this. Gaurav responds that Aryan will never understand him and then frees his hand from Aryan's hand. He then falls to his death with a smile on his face. A horrified Aryan watches even after Gaurav lands to his death, still smiling.

Aryan’s name is cleared from all the controversies surrounding him, with Gaurav's name forever joined to his but the ordeal still haunts him to the point where he sees "Gaurav" again amongst the crowd when he greets his fans on his next birthday.

Development

On 16 December 2013, Yash Raj Films announced the project with Shah Rukh Khan as the main lead and Maneesh Sharma as the director.[12] On 25 March 2014, it was announced that Greg Cannom is going to develop the look of Khan in the film.[13] Khan underwent 3D scanning for his look as a young boy.[14] Though it had at one time been reported that Khan was scheduled to play a 17-year-old boy in the film,[15] Khan later denied the claim.[16]

Filming

Principal photography of the film began in July 2014.[17] The film was shot in Mumbai, Croatia, London and Delhi.[18] The film is the first ever to be shot at the Madame Tussauds in London.[19] On 7 August 2015, it was announced that the filming of the project was completed.[20][21]

Release

Fan was scheduled to release in early 2015, but owing to the injuries sustained by Khan during the filming of Happy New Year, the film's release date was postponed to 14 August 2015.[6][22] The post-production work involving complex visual effects pushed the release of Fan once again to early 2016.[23]

After several delays, the film released on 15 April 2016[24] in 3500 screens in India and around 1100 screens abroad.[25] It was produced on a budget of ₹850 million (US$13 million) and an additional ₹200 million (US$3.0 million) was spent on publicity, for a combined cost of approximately ₹1.05 billion (US$16 million).[26] The studio recouped part of their investment before release by selling the satellite rights to Sony Pictures Networks at around ₹450 million (US$6.7 million).[27]

Marketing

The logo of the film, the first of its kind with a collage of pictures of Khan's real fans, was released on 23 October 2015.[28] The makers released a 2-minute teaser for the film on Shah Rukh Khan's birthday on 2 November 2015.[29] This was followed by the music video of the song "Jabra Fan", released on 16 February 2016 for promotional purposes and not featured in the film.[30] The official trailer of Fan was released on 29 February 2016 to a tremendous response initially as it was watched 4 million times on the Internet in the first 24 hours. The 3-minute video later garnered over 20 million views on YouTube with more than 170K likes, record for a Bollywood film.[31]

The music for Fan is composed by Vishal-Shekhar with lyrics written by Varun Grover. The first song "Jabra Fan", was released on 16 February 2016.[32] The full soundtrack album was released on 22 February 2016 which included 8 songs, all of which were different versions of the song "Jabra Fan". The song was in 8 different prominent Indian languages sung by regional singers.[33][34][35]

Critical reception

Fan has received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 82%, based on 11 reviews, with an average rating of 6.8/10.[36] Raja Sen from Rediff.com gave the film 4.5 out of 5 stars and called Fan a brilliant film with Shah Rukh Khan at his best.[37] Zee News also awarded the film 4.5 stars, saying "The movie encapsulates the fandom which SRK as a star enjoys and why his fans must watch this to understand how he achieved what he did."[38] The Times of India rated the film 4 out of 5 and commented, "Fan is Shah Rukh Khan's triumph all the way. He pulls off a terrifically dramatic double act, altering his look, feel and intensity, but as Gaurav, Shah Rukh makes you forget everything – except feeling scared."[39] Mid Day also saw the film worthy of 4/5 and reviewed, "Right from the beginning of this thriller, which undoubtedly boasts of one, oops, two of his best performances, it is evident why Shah Rukh Khan is needed for a film of this sort, and why only someone in his position and with his caliber could do it too."[40] Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and opined, "On the whole, FAN has a brilliant first half, but loses track in the second hour, only to pick up again towards the pre-climax. The writing should've been tighter, but what works is the terrific act by SRK as the fan.".[41]

The Hindu called the film Khan's return to form and said, "SRK couldn't have found a better vehicle than Fan, both as an actor and as a celebration of the highs and the lows of his own stardom. A stardom whose enormity he'd himself find difficult to wrap around his head."[42] The Indian Express also gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated, "Fan is a triumph. Shah Rukh Khan is played to all his strengths, and he plays it just right, gliding in and out of the star and the fan, creating distinct identities and outlines in one scene, and blurring the lines just so in the next."[43] India Today gave the film 3.5 stars as well and commented, "Maneesh Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan hand-deliver the mindscape – of both the fan and the star – on screen. And brilliantly."[44] Hindustan Times also rated it 3.5 out of 5 and went on to say, "Though Fan is irrational at times, it keeps the adrenaline pumping all 143-minutes of the movie. Also, the idea of keeping it a song-less film works because that keeps the overdramatic tone from seeping in."[45] NDTV Movies gave the film 3 stars on 5 and opined, "Fan works for the most part because it has the fabulous SRK act as a 'young' star-struck boy. His energetic performance is worth the price of the ticket – if not more."[46]
