Fog Lake is the lo-fi singer-songwriter project of Canadian musician Aaron Powell. Powell began writing/recording songs during his teenage years in Glovertown, Newfoundland. The project is now based out of St. John's, Newfoundland. In 2014, Powell signed to Orchid Tapes, which he remains signed to today. Powell's recordings have been described as "a complex collage of nebulous angst and heartfelt nostalgia".[1]

Fog Lake's most recent release entitled "Victoria Park" was released 30 June 2015.[2] on both cassette (via Orchid Tapes) as well for free digitally via bandcamp.[3]

History

Powell began working in the lo-fi genre during his teenage years in Glovertown. The project began as ambient experiments, sampling and covers to "highly introspective, original recordings". [4] The project became a part of a lo-fi resurgence that labels such as Birdtapes and Orchid Tapes helped bring about in the 2010's, along with acts such as Teen Suicide, Alex G, Foxes in Fiction, R.L Kelly and Coma Cinema. Powell's music is crafted in a DIY format on little budget.

Fog Lake's debut record "There's a Spirit, There's a Soul" quickly received attention from music blogs and websites. Powell soon recorded his first EP "Inference III" "entirely in one night, a few days after dropping out of art school", in June 2012.[5] but the project found a following after the release of Fog Lake's follow up album, Farther Reaches, released in January 2013. The title-track of the record "Farther Reaches" was posted to a popular YouTube channel, Majestic Casual.[6] The video quickly gathered over 300,000 hits. Powell released his second EP "Holy Cross" months later in June 2013 through Birdtapes. Powell followed up "Farther Reaches" in February 2014 with his third full-length record, "Virgo Indigo", which received coverage from websites such as The Fader and No Fear of Pop.
