Foodora GmbH is a Berlin-based online food delivery company[1] which specializes in premium restaurants. Foodora delivers from over 5,000 restaurants[2] in 10 countries worldwide: Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Canada, and Australia.[3]
History
Foodora was founded under the name Volo GmbH in Munich in February 2014 by Konstantin Mehl, Emanuel Pallua, Julian Dames, Sergei Krauze, and Stefan Rothlehner. It relocated to Berlin when Rocket Internet acquired 100% of the company in April 2015.[4] In September 2015, Delivery Hero acquired Foodora from Rocket Internet.[5] Foodora was then merged with Delivery Hero’s upscale food delivery brand, Urban Taste, under the name Foodora.[6] That month, Foodora also acquired food delivery services Hurrier (in Canada), Suppertime (in Australia),[7] and Heimschmecker (in Austria).[8]
“We have a very long-term view for this segment and will do what it takes to make sure we are the preferred choice for restaurants and customers worldwide,” said Nikolas Östberg, CEO of Delivery Hero, about his company’s acquisition of Foodora.[9]
Operations
Using Foodora’s website or mobile app, customers can browse restaurants near them, place their order, and pay. The order is then prepared by the restaurant, picked up by one of Foodora’s couriers, and delivered to the customer “in about 30 minutes[10]”. Foodora provides both B2C and B2B food delivery services.
Australia
Foodora has expanded over the Australian market in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Potential expansions to Perth and Gold Coast are being planned. In September 2015, Foodora Acquired a local delivery company Suppertime, later to re-brand it to Foodora in May.
Controversies
Foodora has been accused of "sham contracts[11]" with its workers and the way their one-sided payment scheme.
