GMA Asianovelas: The Heart of Asia (simply GMA The Heart of Asia or informally abbreviated HOA) is an entertainment programming block of GMA Network and its secondary network QTV (now GMA News TV) which broadcast Filipino dubbed TV series from Asian countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and China. Its first ever Asian drama (locally called Asianovela) was My MVP Valentine from Taiwan.[1] HOA had already aired more than 150 Asianovelas as of the end of 2014.

History

Soap operas and drama series have become a staple for daytime and primetime viewing in the Philippines. In the 1990s, Mexican telenovelas became the mania, with huge hits like Rosalinda and MariMar attracting ratings above 50 percent. Asian dramas have become hits in the 2000s.[2]

In May 2003, Taiwanese series Meteor Garden became a phenomenal hit in the Philippines becoming the fifth highest rating TV program in the history of Philippine television according to AGB Nielsen. In June 2003, GMA Network also started importing TV series from Taiwan. Its first drama was My MVP Valentine which premiered on June 9, 2003.[1] In 2005, Full House recorded an average rating of 42.3 percent, becoming the highest rated Koreanovela in the Philippines.[3] In 2005 and 2006, the network aired Japanese drama Golden Bowl and Chinese drama Love of the Condor Heroes respectively.

GMA Heart of Asia also currently airs Midnight Horror Stories and Heart of Asia Presents. Midnight Horror Stories features Japanese horror flix which airs on Saturdays at 23:00 PHT while Heart of Asia Presents airs KBS Drama Specials on Mondays to Thursdays at 22:00 PHT starting on March 14, 2016 for GMA Network's Telebabad slot until April 21, 2016.[4][5]
