Gangapur City is a city and municipal corporation of Nagar Parishad in Sawai Madhopur district in the state of Rajasthan, India.

Geography

Gangapur City is located in eastern Rajasthan, a north-western state in India. it is the main B-Grade railway station on Delhi-Bombay rail route and the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur, just 126 km from here.

And the district headquarters Sawai Madhopur is 72 km, and the most famous temple Kailadevi Temple(Kaurali) is 37 km. In Gangapur a big roadways bus stand and recpected private bus stand and jeeps-car stand to go anywhere from the Gangapur city.

History

Legend has it that King “Kushaliram Haldiya” established Gangapur, originally naming it Kushal Garh. Gangapur took its current name because of gangaram which was brother of kushaliram. In olden days, Gangapur City was the cultural capital of the state of Jaipur and was known as “The Jugad of the East.” Its most notable native was the late Shri Jeeman Lal Shukla, who was owner and founder of Shri Madho Govind Temple (a medieval-period Radha Krishna Temple) under the reign of Jaipur Maharaja Shri Sawai Mansingh I. In his cross country voyage, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati stayed in this temple for several days while passing on his teachings to Arya Samaj.

Today, Gangapur is primarily known for being an important part of the West Central Railway.[2] The city was home to many Anglo Indian families including the Corneiles, Patmans, Gillespies, and Francises. Most of the English community has now moved away, with only a small percent remaining. Some English traditions remain in the form of place names, words, and games.

Every year besakh shukla puranmasi this fair is organised at Gangapur City. This fair is organised for seven days. Thousands of people join this fair. It is one of the most famous fairs in the city which is celebrated every May. It is a good sign of brotherhood of all religions that many events are organized by the different religions. It is an enjoyable fair for kids, adults and senior citizens.
