Geechee red pea

Geechee red pea is a pea plant variety grown on Sapelo Island on the Atlantic Ocean coast in the U.S. The small iron-colored peas "cook-up creamy and dusky-sweet" accordingto John T. Edge. They are a New Year's Day tradition in Hogg Hummock among the descendants of enslaved African Americans. Black-eyed peas are used elsewhere. The peas are hand shelled and sun dried.[1]
