Thapa was born and brought up in Sikkim. She did her schooling in Sikkim and thereafter moved to Kolkata for graduation, where she was a model before joining films.[5][6][7] She won the Mega Miss North East 2007 beauty pageant held at Guwahati, Assam.[8]

Thapa’s debut short English film was Myth (2006) that was made in Sikkim, directed by Prashant Rasaily, when she was still in school. Her first Hindi film Tina Ki Chaabi (2010) was not released.[9][10] Her next film I.D. directed by Kamal K.M. got her two international awards for best actress — at the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Madrid Film Festival.[11] Meanwhile she did several TV commercials, including a L'Oreal ad with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.[7]

In Liar's Dice, Geetanjali plays a courageous and somewhat recklessly irresponsible woman from the high Himalayas and mother to a precocious little daughter in search of her missing husband.[12]

Thapa also stars in the Academy award winning director Danis Tanovic's Indian film, Tigers, along with Emraan Hashmi, where she plays a Pakistani woman.[13][14]
