Establishment

Germantown High School (GHS), located in Madison, Mississippi, is one of 11 public high schools in Madison County, Mississippi.[2] The school was launched in August 2011 as part of the Madison County School District, one of the fastest-growing school districts in the state of Mississippi.[3]

The school touts a strong college-preparatory curriculum and includes teams for 18 varsity sports, varsity band and dance programs, and more than 20 school clubs.[3] The school maintains a partnership with Holmes Community College in Goodman, Mississippi allowing academically-qualified Seniors to participate in a dual enrollment program, spending part of their day on each campus and taking college-level courses.[3]

Demographics

During the 2014-15 school year, approximately 950 students were enrolled at Germantown High School.[3]

Non-European-American enrollment at the school is approximately 37%, in contrast to Mississippi's about 55% African-American majority of school-aged children.[2] This represents a very similar racial distribution to other schools in the city of Madison.[4] Approximately 48% of the GHS student body is female, 52% male — numbers which differ only slightly from the statewide average of 49% female, 51% male.[4]

Team sports

Germantown High School, with its teams named the "Mavericks," maintains a total of 18 varsity sports.[3] These include football, baseball, golf, soccer, track and field, cross-country, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and bowling.[5] The school also has programs in the less-common high school sports of powerlifting and team dance.[5] One well-known athlete is Aren Worrell, who scored the game-winning PK against Oxford in a 2015 girls' soccer playoff game.

Band

The Germantown High School band[6] in its first year took home third place in competition. In 2013, the band had an undefeated record and won the 5A state championship with a record score of 96.500,[7] becoming the first band to have an undefeated season in Mississippi. Later in the school year, the GHS band went to Georgia to compete on the national level, winning the Southern Star sweepstakes competition.[8] In the Germantown bands 2014 marching season the Germantown band took home the second place trophy.
