Clean Bandit are an English electronic group founded in Cambridge, England, in 2009. The group consists of Jack Patterson, Luke Patterson, Grace Chatto, and Milan Neil Amin-Smith.[1]
Their 2010 single "Mozart's House", released on Black Butter Records, reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart. In January 2014, they scored their first UK Singles Chart-topping single with "Rather Be", a collaboration with Jess Glynne, featuring elements of both classical and dance music. "Rather Be" remained at the top of the chart for four weeks. In 2014, they achieved their first US top 10 single with "Rather Be" peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2]
In 2015, "Rather Be" won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.[3]
History
2006–12: formation and career beginnings
Band members Jack Patterson, Grace Chatto, and Milan Neil Amin-Smith met while studying as undergraduates at Jesus College, University of Cambridge.[4] At the time, Amin-Smith was leading a string quartet together with Chatto, who both attended Westminster School.[5]
The band's name, Clean Bandit, comes from a translation of a Russian phrase; the meaning is similar to the English phrase "complete bastard", though Patterson later stated that it is actually a more affectionate term similar to "utter rascal".[6][7]
2012–15: New Eyes
In December 2012, the group released their debut single "A+E", which peaked at number 100 on the UK Singles Chart. It was the lead single from their debut studio album New Eyes, released on 2 June 2014 on Atlantic Records UK.[8] On 29 February 2012, they released the video online for their single "UK Shanty", featuring supermodel Lily Cole. On 29 March 2013, they released the album's second single "Mozart's House". The song peaked at number 17 on the UK Singles Chart. The album's third single "Dust Clears" charted at number 43 on the chart. The album's fourth single "Rather Be" featuring Jess Glynne was released on 19 January 2014 and topped the UK Singles Chart. It was the fastest-selling song released in January since 1996 and ended 2014 as the year's second best-selling song in the UK (after "Happy" by Pharrell Williams), selling over 1.13 million copies.[9]
On 14 April 2014, the band made their TV debut on the BBC's Later... with Jools Holland.[10] In May 2014, they also announced a 14 date headline tour of the UK.[11] In September 2014 they performed with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at MediaCityUK.[12][13] The band collaborated again with Jess Glynne, after their hit song "Rather Be", on their single "Real Love". It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart.[14]
In February 2015, "Rather Be" won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.[15]
During the course of the rest of 2015, the group have constantly been on all sorts of tours around the world to promote the post-release of New Eyes and carried on through into the early months of 2016.
2015-present: Second studio album
Within the late months of 2015, whilst at Coachella, the group performed their first song outside of their debut studio album, entitled "Disconnect", which features vocals from Marina and The Diamonds. This eventually sparked much interest about a new album that was in the works, which seemed almost immediately after the release of their debut studio album New Eyes.
After the touring period finished in February 2016, the group was constantly reported on working on new music and the group confirmed this in the following month, stating "things aren't quite ready yet with the new songs, so we're going to have to spend a bit longer in the studio." During the process, they will be cancelling some of their summer shows in order to do so and, with this in mind, the new album is estimated to be coming sometime in 2017.
In April 2016, the band revealed that they were working with Sean Paul and RØMANS on their second studio album.
Music style
The band mixes electronic music with classical pieces by composers such as Mozart and Shostakovich.[6] Some of their music also involves tongue in cheek humour.[6]
Videos
Chatto and Patterson formed their own film production company, Cleanfilm, to make music videos for themselves and other artists.[4]
