Greek basketball clubs in European competitions

Greek basketball clubs plays in European competitions since 1957-58 when Panellinios took part in FIBA European Champions Cup. The basketball was the first team sport that the Greek teams won a cup. AEK won the FIBA European Cup Winners' Cup in 1968 when won Slavia Prague in the final taken place in Athens.[1] Nevertheless the Greek basketball actually boosted after winning of Eurobasket by Greek National Team in 1987. The next decades Greek teams dominated in European Basketball, winning many cups in all competitions. Greek clubs have totally won 18 European cups.[2][3] Also they were finalist 11 times. Two Greek teams have won the Basketball Euroleague, Panathinaikos (6 times) and Olympiacos (3 times).[4] Four Greek teams have won a 2nd tier cup such as Cup Winners Cup/Saporta Cup or Eurocup. The winners are AEK (two times), PAOK, Aris and Maroussi.[5] Two even teams have won a 3rd tier cup, FIBA Korać Cup or EuroChallenge, Aris and PAOK.[6] Aris has won the 4th tier FIBA EuroCup Challenge one time.

Overall 21 Greek clubs have played in European competitions. Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, AEK, Aris, PAOK, Panionios, Panellinios, Maroussi and Iraklis have played in all tiers. Peristeri has played in competitions of 1st and 3rd tier. Apollon Patras and Ionikos Neas Filadelfeias have played in competitions of 2nd and 3rd tier. Makedonikos has played in only competitions of 2nd tier and HAN Thessaloniki, Sporting, Near East, Ionikos Nikaias, Papagou, Irakleio, Olympia Larissa and Olympias Patras have played in only competitions of 3rd tier.
