Hazelwood School District is a school district covering a large portion of north St. Louis County, Missouri, including (portions of) the cities of Florissant, Hazelwood, Black Jack, Spanish Lake, Ferguson, Bellefontaine Neighbors, and Bridgeton.
History
The Hazelwood School District was involved in Hazelwood School District vs. Kuhlmeier, a 1988 landmark Supreme Court case which ruled that public school curricular student newspapers that have not been established as forums for student expression are subject to a lower level of First Amendment protection than independent student expression or newspapers established (by policy or practice) as forums for student expression.[5]
The school district was also involved in Hazelwood School District v. United States, a case concerning employment discrimination.
In 2016 the district announced it was making cuts to band, elementary orchestra, physical education, and other programs totaling in the millions of dollars. At the same time several district administrators made salaries in the six figures.[6]
