Welltower, Inc. (formerly known as Health Care REIT, Inc.) is a real estate investment trust that primarily invests in assisted living facilities and other forms of housing and medical facilities for senior citizens. It also owns medical office buildings and facilities used by biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies . It ranked 746 on the Fortune 1000 in 2014.,[3] and is a component of the S&P 500.
History
The company was founded in 1970 by Bruce Thompson and Frederic D. Wolfe to be the first health-care real estate investment trust. Originally named Health Care Fund, it changed its name to Healthcare REIT, Inc. in 1985.[1] The company was led by George Chapman from 1996 to 2014, when he resigned and was replaced with the current CEO, Thomas DeRosa.[4]
Acquisitions
In 2011 it acquired the real estate assets of Genesis HealthCare for $2.4 billion.[5] On January 8, 2013, the company acquired Sunrise Senior Living and subsequently spun out the management company to a partnership including Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P., and affiliates of Beecken Petty O'Keefe & Company in a transaction valued by the company in excess of $4 billion.[6] In January 2015 the company acquired nine Benchmark Senior Living complexes located in New England for $360 million.[7]
