History
On Tuesday, October 16, 2007, Hofstra University and North Shore-LIJ Health System (now known as the Northwell Health system) announced plans to establish a new school of medicine, and on March 26, 2008, signed the Joint Academic Agreement that established the school.[5] On Tuesday, June 8, 2010 the school had been approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the accrediting agency, allowing it to begin reviewing applications as early as July 1. While not the first medical school in Nassau County (that distinction is held by the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, the medical college of the New York Institute of Technology), it is the first to grant the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. It's also New York State's first new M.D. medical school since 1963, according to Dr. Lawrence G. Smith, the new school’s dean.
In June 2010, the medical school opened their initial academic building, and on August 1, 2011, welcomed its inaugural class.[6][7] After receiving Provisional Accreditation from the LCME in June 2013, the medical school began construction of a HLW International-designed,[8] 63,000 square-foot addition to their medical education center building, bringing the facility to a gross 113,000 square feet.[9] On May 11, 2015, the school's inaugural class graduated with 29 students.[10] The entire graduating class received residencies to institutions across the US.
On January 1st 2016, the medical school changed its name from Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine to Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Along with the health system North Shore-LIJ Health System which became Northwell Health System.[11]
