Holler is the second EP by the South Korean girl group, Girls' Generation-TTS. It was released digitally on September 16, 2014, and physically on September 18, 2014, by S. M. Entertainment.[1][2]

Background and release

Holler debuted at number 1 on both Gaon's weekly chart[3] and Billboard World Albums chart. As a result of this, TTS became the third Korean artist, and the first female one, to have at least two albums at number 1 on the latter chart. The group previously achieved the number 1 spot, two years back, with their debut release, Twinkle.[4] They made their first comeback performance in a showcase at the Olympic Park’s Woori Financial Art Hall in Seoul, performing various songs including tracks from their previous album.[5][6][7]

During an interview with Billboard, the three singers expressed, "This album was really personal for us and it was fun...to put out a much more raw side of our music...the music we put together has so much more layers, so much more depth to it in terms of sound, choruses or harmonizing together....Our main goal was to not be visually entertaining, but be vocally entertaining."[8] They further described the album as an edgier, more mature version of its predecessor, Twinkle, and stated, "We want to make feel good songs that are relatable, we want to make albums that are more natural...and speak from the bottom of our hearts."[9] The trio revealed that Taeyeon took the responsibility for the song selection,[10] Seohyun penned the lyrics to the song, "Only U",[8] while Tiffany served as the visual director to the overall album image and the concept of "Holler" music video.[11][12] The release of the album coincided with the broadcast of TTS's own reality television show, The TaeTiSeo; thus, some footage of the album preparation was shown.[13]

The group performed various songs for their promotional activities including "Holler", "Whisper", "Only U", and "Adrenaline".[14][15][16][17][18][19][20] They achieved two "Number 1" wins on Mnet's M Countdown,[21][22][23][24] one win on MBC's Music Core,[25] one win on SBS's Inkigayo, and one win on KBS's Music Bank.[26][27] The group made some radio and television appearances such as on MBC's "Sunny's FM Date",[28][29] or KBS2's You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook, where they sang a rendition of Destiny's Child's "Cater 2 U".[30]

Singles

The single track "Whisper" was released on September 13,[31] peaking at number 4 on Gaon's weekly chart.[32]

The title track, "Holler" peaked at number 3 on Gaon's weekly chart[32] and number 6 on Billboard's World digital song chart.[4] It was described by Tiffany as "a rhythmical song that has a big brass sound that stands out with a funky groove, soul, and is overflowing with energy".[33][34] Its music video became number 1 on YouTube’s weekly "Top 20 K-Pop Music Video Chart",[35][36] and later the most viewed K-Pop video in America & around the world for the month of September.[37] The song was initially given to Japanese singer Mizuki Watanabe under the title "Hello Me!", which was a B-side of her 2007 single, "Best Friend".[38]

Music videos

Holler

The video begins with individual shots of Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun appearing in a bright and colorful grand ballroom set to the instrumental of "Adrenaline", another song from the EP. The three are then seen walking together before the camera is knocked dizzy, exclaiming "This is Crazy!" in speech bubbles. The girls are next seen on together posing on a staircase, with Seohyun twirling a set of keys in her hands. She teases an unseen man with the keys before handing it to him. The song begins with the unseen man holding keys in his hands as he arrives at an elevator. The girls are seen in the elevator waving to the man. He looks around him but when he focuses his attention back to the girls, they have already disappeared. They appear again suddenly but Tiffany is not seen. Taeyeon and Seohyun raise their hands, indicating that they also have no idea where Tiffany has disappeared to.

The first verse of the song is set in the grand ballroom with all three girls dancing with male dancers as Taeyeon sings her verse. Following her part, Tiffany continues the song and is seen in the elevator before exiting it and dancing in the ballroom as well. The girls are then seen dancing on a long, white dining table wearing all white outfits, with an audience of men in suits sitting at the table as they sing the first chorus.

The second verse sees the elevator going up and Seohyun is singing her verse in a golden, harem-like setting. Taeyeon's part also takes place partially in the harem-like setting, where at one point all three girls are seen sitting together in a large sofa. The second chorus takes place in a light blue room filled with water as well as a jungle-like garden.

When Tiffany sings the bridge, she is seen sitting on a sofa shaped like a hand, complete with Egyptian hieroglyphs. Tiffany is next seen in a red sports car while Taeyeon continues the song in the grand ballroom seen previously. The three girls are then shown in a dance party wearing headphones and DJs spinning records. The crowd at the party soon join them in their dance.

The video ends with the elevator going all the way down. The unseen man hands the keys back to them, which Taeyeon promptly takes. The three of them smile at him and each other before waving goodbye to him.
