"I Might Be A Cunt, But I'm Not A Fucking Cunt" is a song by TISM, released as the second single from their album www.tism.wanker.com in 1998.
Due to lyrical content, the song was almost universally banned, as was the video for both the lyrical nature of the song and the sexual nature of the video. The title of the song references the 1996 film From Dusk Till Dawn when George Clooney's character says the line "I may be a bastard, but I'm not a fucking bastard."
Song
On the literal level, the song focuses on a man who admits that he has faults, but when viewed in perspective, those faults are not entirely bad. For example, having sex with "your sister" makes him bad, but he's not entirely bad because he refuses to have sex with "your mum". Eventually the man concedes that he might not be able to control all of his urges and makes the leap from cunt to fucking cunt by asking for "your mum's number." On a figurative level the song operates on numerous levels, carrying on the themes of the album. On one level, it is a paean to those in the lower class who are proud of who and what they are, as noted in the line "I might have gone to uni, but at least I know I'm dumb." On another level, it is a criticism of those same people, those who revel in their mediocrity.
The song's chord progression is C-A#-C, which it shares with "Science Fiction" by Divinyls. The two songs have a near identical strumming pattern.
Video
The video, directed by Craig Melville, is a parody of the Mimi Macpherson sex video.
At the beginning, actual video footage of the wedding between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee is shown. It then cuts to a video of a couple undressing, and having sex. According to the timestamp in the corner, it was filmed on 14 March 1998. The male then adjusts the camera, to reveal a TISM member reading a book. The woman then dons flippers. The man, after a fast forward, can be seen in a Jeff Kennett mask and cricket pads. The woman then gives him fellatio, and it abruptly cuts to static.
The video was played once on SBS Australia's 'Alchemy' show which its hosts at the time said would never play again, even though viewer demand was high for a repeat in the following weeks. The video is available uncensored on the initial pressings of the album www.tism.wanker.com (1998) and on the second DVD of The White Albun (2004).
Controversy
The single release of the song brought controversy back to TISM once again. The song and its accompanying music video of a couple having sex was banned by the SBS, ABC's rage, and Triple J due to its content, however it was played quite frequently by Melbourne independent broadcaster 3RRR on the Breakfasters show. Bruce Ruxton, the head of the Australian RSL, wrote a letter of complaint to Shock Records asking for TISM to be fired from the label, and describing the song as "...Dropping [Australia's standards] through the floor into the proverbial sewer".
Ron Hitler-Barassi responded to criticism in an interview:
I actually like the song, the thing that disappoints me about some of the reaction to the song is people's reaction was confined to "oh how naughty, oh those naughty boys TISM have said a naughty word, fuck, and another naughty word, cunt, and oh that's so naughty" and I must admit, I was sort of, and I shouldn't have, I was disappointed with that reaction ... We were attempting to use the common dialect of people in the street, to sum up a term, have a good pisstake. It's more than just naughtiness. That's very profound isn't it?[1]
