The India national under-17 football team, also known as India under-17s or India U17(s), represents India in association football at an under-16 age level and is controlled by the All India Football Federation, the governing body for football in India.
Competition history
AFC U-16 Championship
The top regional competition for the India U16s/U17s is the AFC U-16 Championship, which started in 1985. India played in the tournament for the first time in 1990 in which the team finished in third position in their group of four, only winning one match against Jordan.[1] India then qualified for the tournament again in 1996 in which they finished last in their group which included Iran, Thailand, Bahrain and China PR.[2] Another six years went by before the team qualifed for the 2002 tournament in which India managed to make it to the quarter-finals, where they lost 3–1 to South Korea.[3] India qualified for the 2004 tournament but could not make it past the group stage, finishing third out of four in a group that had Iran, Kuwait and Malaysia.[4] India went on to compete in the 2008 version in which they again finished third in a four team group failing to make the quarter-finals.[5] In 2012 AFC U-16 Championship, India was drawn in the "group of death" along with the like of Uzbekistan, Syria, China PR, and while they performed commendably, they failed to progress having lost once and drawing twice.[6][7][8] India U16s did not qualify for 2014 AFC U-16 Championship as they finished 2nd in qualification group stage matches.

SAFF U-16 Championship
2011 SAFF U-16 Championships
The India under-16 team participated in the 2011 SAFF U-16 Championship, but started the competition by failing to win their first match in a 1-0 loss to rivals Pakistan. Indian followed up that with a 5-0 win against Maldives, and hence qualifying for the semi-finals, where they won against Nepal U16 4-2 in the tie breaker to move on to the final against Pakistan, but lost the match 2-1.
2013 SAFF U-16 Championships
The India under-16 team participated in the 2013 SAFF U-16 Championship, Nepal, and was drawn in Group B alongside Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. India played their first match against Sri Lanka where they won with a scoreline of 4-1. In the second match against Bangladesh, they won 2-0, and thus qualified for semi-final as group toppers. India played against Afghanistan in the semi-final clash, winning the game 4-3 in the tie breaker, before defeating tough contender Nepal 1-0 in the final to lift the 2013 SAFF U-16 Championship.[9]

FIFA U-17 World Cup
The Indian team has never qualified for any FIFA U-17 World Cup to date, but will host the 2017 edition, and by virtue of being the host, they qualify automatically to play in the tournament. This will be the first time any Indian football team at all age levels, hosts a tournament at international level. Depending on the success of the team in the tournament and the success of the tournament, the All India Football Federation has hinted at making bids to host the FIFA World Cup in the future.
India has confirmed that Kochi will be one of the host cities in the tournament. They have five more cities to select out of a list of seven options including New Delhi, Pune, Bombay, Panjim, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Guwahati.
