Aboriginal-based organized crime (ABOC) is a term used to refer to Canadian criminal organizations which have a significant percentage of Aboriginal members. These organizations are primarily found in the prairie provinces but mostly in Winnipeg, Manitoba the Gang Capital of Canada, which tend to have areas with high concentrations of people of Aboriginal descent.[2] ABOC is an important national monitored issue, as defined by Criminal Intelligence Service Canada.[3]
Criminal activities
There is confusion about how to properly intervene in preventing the growth of these gangs. One approach in Winnipeg recommended an all-Aboriginal school board in the face of increased gang involvement by Aboriginal youth.[4] These schools are viewed as a means of increasing respect for traditional Aboriginal values while giving youth the opportunity to avoid involvement in gangs. There is caution toward such strategies due to the fear that these schools, purely as an anti-crime initiative, will lead to ghettoization.[5] The thought of creating an Aboriginal school system struck some as reeking of segregation. Similar initiatives have been discussed in Saskatchewan, leading to a recommendation by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations in late 2009.[6]
Aboriginal street gangs
Aboriginal gangs, as they are classified by the Criminal Intelligence Service Canada, have surpassed outlaw motorcycle gangs and Italian organized crime syndicates as the largest single group held in federal prisons, with 1,936 members serving federal sentences.[7]

Indian Posse (X4) is a Violent Norteño-Based Gang that originated from the streets of Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1987, formed to protect themselves and rebel against Society. IP is made up of many different cliques that are known to rival each other. Indian Posses are Notorious for being the most violent set of Gangs in Canada, involved in many homicides.[8] They represent by the following symbols, 916, 88's, 425(for life), P, 1988, :.. The Posses rival any other gang, but their biggest rivals are Native Syndicates, MOB, Manitoba Warriors, Crips and Sureños.[9]
Winnipeg's Indian Posse was featured in the fictional film Stryker by Noam Gonick which presents a positive portrayal of the gang "Armies of Resistance" to poverty and other problems. The film dealt with conflicts involving the now-defunct rival gang Asian Bomb Squad a set of ABZ. The main character was referred to as "Stryker," which is a slang term for prospective recruits.[10]

The Manitoba Blood Family X4 is a Norteño-Based set of Gangs active in Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan. MBFx4 allies with most other Bloods sets. MBF originated in 1998.
