Ingleborough Tower Windmill is located one mile north of the village of West Walton in the English county of Norfolk.[1] The windmill is situated in the yard of Hill House Farm along with a house and assorted farm buildings. The mill is now in a state of disuse. The mill tower was made a Grade II listed building in 1951.[2]

Description

This tall mill was built in 1824.[3] The tower mill stood over eight storeys high and is constructed from brick. At the fourth floor level there is a gallery. There are windows on each floor top to bottom with three windows on the south elevation. At its crown there is a Sawtooth cornice in brickwork, below curb track. The tower was topped with a white ogee cap which has been removed. A set of railings was installed around the top in 1980.[3] The sails, of which there were once six, were removed in 1940.[3] Internally the tower still has all its floors and stairs but all the machinery has been removed.

History

In kelly’s Directory for Cambridgeshire, Norfolk & Suffolk of 1883, Ingleborough towermill is listed as being in the ownership of William Judd,[4] a miller, baker and farmer. In Kelly's Directory of 1904, the proprietor was Henry Fretwell, a corn miller and the mill was said to powered by both wind & steam.
